Barry Kauler has announced the release of a new version of Quirky, a close relative to Puppy Linux that is built using a tool called Woof. The new release, Quirky 8.2, runs on 64-bit x86 computers and offers mostly incremental improvements over previous 8.x releases: "Quirky Linux 8.2 x86_64 is codenamed 'Xerus' and is built using the woofQ Quirky Linux build system, with the help of Ubuntu 16.04.2 binary packages. Thus, Xerus has compatibility with all of the Ubuntu repositories. Quirky is a fork of Puppy Linux, and is mainly differentiated by being a "full installation" only, with special snapshot and recovery features, and Service Pack upgrades, though recently there is limited support for live-CD session-saving and "frugal" installation. Version 8.2 has many architectural improvements and package upgrades, including new packages JWMDesk, UrxvtControl and Take-a-Shot. Among architectural improvements, the overlay file system has been dumped in favour of aufs, mime-handling fixes, and network-connection refinements. A significant change in application selection is VLC dumped in favour of Xine. The Linux kernel is version 4.11.11 and SeaMonkey is upgraded to version 2.48b1." The Netrunner team has announced a new snapshot of the project's rolling release edition, which is based on Manjaro Linux. The rolling release, which was last updated about 18 months ago, includes package updates across the board. The new snapshot, Netrunner 2017.07, features the KDE Plasma 5.10.3 desktop environment, Firefox 54 and version 4.11.8 of the Linux kernel. "Yes, it's back: An up-to-date Netrunner Rolling ISO has been released today after 18 months from the last release. That means Netrunner is now available again as part of the two biggest non-commercial, community-driven distributions since our split from Maui: Debian and Manjaro/Arch. While it would have been possible to simply update the previous system due to its inherent rolling nature, we recommend a fresh install. Our plan is to release an updated install medium regularly 2-3x times a year. What's new? Compared to the 2016.01 version which featured KDE Plasma 5.5.4, Qt 5.5.1 and Firefox 44 at that time, here is what's changed: KDE Plasma 5.10.3, KDE Frameworks 5.35, KDE Applications 17.04.2, Qt 5.9.0, Linux Kernel 4.11.8, Firefox 54.0.1, Thunderbird 52.2.1, LibreOffice 5.2.7." Jos Schellevis has announced the release of a new development snapshot of the OPNsense operating system, a firewall platform based on FreeBSD. The new release candidate for OPNsense 17.7 includes security and stability improvements as well as several updated translations: "We are writing to you today to announce the first release candidate for version 17.7, which, over the course of the last five months, includes highlights such as SafeStack application hardening, the Realtek re driver for network stability, a Quagga plugin with broad routing protocol support and the Unbound resolver as the new default. Additionally, translations for Czech, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese and German have been completed during this iteration. Focus in OPNsense has shifted to improving and streamlining its various systems and providing continuous updates, which amounts to over 300 individual changes made in 17.1 so far." The SparkyLinux team has announced the release of SparkyLinux 5.0. The new release is based on Debian's Testing branch and is available in three editions: LXQt, MATE and Xfce. "Sparky "Home" edition provides fully featured operating system with lightweight desktops: LXQt, MATE and Xfce. As usually, Sparky MinimalGUI (Openbox) and MinimalCLI (text based) lets you install the base system with a minimal set of applications and a desktop of your choice, via the Sparky Advanced Installer. Changes between version 4.5 and 5.0: full system upgraded from Debian Testing repos as of July 14, 2017; Linux kernel 4.11.6 as default (4.12.x is available in Sparky Unstable repo); new theme 'Sparky5'; new theme of LXQt edition; new default wallpaper created by our community member 'barti'; new set of wallpapers of the Nature category, with a few nice landscapes from Poland; Calamares 3.1.1 as the default system installer; new tool for checking and displaying notification on your desktop about available updates." The SolydXK project has announced the availability SolydXK 9, which is based on packages from the recently released Debian 9. Apart from the new base, SolydXK has removed the Backports repository by default (though it can be re-enabled), added a tool to assist in encrypting partitions and introduced new desktop themes. "In the past three weeks we have been testing, improving, developing and exercising parts of our vocabulary that our mothers didn't even know we had but finally we are satisfied with the result. It is time to release the new SolydX and SolydK version 9. Changes: New themes for SolydX and SolydK. You can choose a light or dark theme. SolydXK Systems has a GUI now where you can encrypt partitions (and your USB flash drive), localize your system, select the fastest repositories, hold back packages and cleanup your system. The encryption part of this application is functioning but still in beta. Use at your own risk! The backport repository was removed by default but can be enabled in the new SolydXK System application. The solydx/k-info packages were integrated in the solydx/k-system-adjustments packages and are now obsolete." More details on SolydXK 9 can be found in the project's release announcement. Following several delays during the development cycle, the Mageia project has announced the release of Mageia 6. The new version includes the KDE Plasma 5 desktop environment, the DNF package manager is now available alongside urpmi and Mageia 6 includes live test media for the Xfce desktop environment: "The extra time that has gone into this release has allowed for many exciting additions, here are a few of the major additions and key features of Mageia 6: KDE Plasma 5 replaces the previous KDE SC 4 desktop environment. The new package manager DNF is provided as an alternative to urpmi, enabling a great packaging ecosystem: Support for AppStream and thus GNOME Software and Plasma Discover; support for Fedora COPR and openSUSE Build Service to provide third-party packages for Mageia 6 and later; dnfdragora, a new GUI tool for package management inspired from rpmdrake. Brand new icon theme for all Mageia tools, notably the Mageia Control Center. Successful integration of the ARM port (ARMv5 and ARMv7) in the build system, allowing to setup ARM chroots. Installation images are not available yet but will come in the future. GRUB2 as the default bootloader. New Xfce Live images to test Mageia with a lighter weight environment." Glen Barber has announced the availability of a new development snapshot for the FreeBSD operating system. The new snapshot, FreeBSD 11.1-RC3, will likely be the project's final release candidate before 11.1 is published. The snapshot features mostly small adjustments and fixes: "A summary of changes since 11.1-RC2 includes: A rare truncation case has been fixed in the runtime linker. Signatures of several pthread stubs have been corrected. Deprecation notices have been added to gdb, kgdb, sicontrol, wlconfig, as well as several drivers that have been removed from 12.0. Loop termination in vm_map_find_min() has been fixed. The layout of the vm_map_entry struct has been restored. The Heimdal KDC-REP service encrypted ticket usage has been fixed. An issue where some Intel SDHCI/eMMC controllers can fail on the first attempt after a D3 to D0 transition has been fixed. Capsicum support has been added to bhyve." The ExTiX project has announced the release of a new version of the Ubuntu-based desktop distribution. The new version, ExTiX 17.7, ships with the Budgie desktop environment and features Refracta Tools for remastering the operating system. "I've made a new extra version of ExTiX with the Budgie Desktop. Budgie is focused on simplicity and elegance. Designed with the modern user in mind. Only a minimum of packages are installed in ExTiX Budgie. You can of course install all the packages you want, even while running ExTiX Budgie live. i.e. from a DVD or USB stick. All four ExTiX systems are based on Ubuntu and Debian. While running ExTiX Budgie 17.7 live or from hard drive you can use Refracta Tools (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu system." The Parrot Security team have announced a new update to their Debian-based, security and penetration testing distribution. The new release, Parrot Security OS 3.7, introduces mostly small improvements and fresh package versions, compliments of Debian's Testing branch: "Of course the release of Debian 9 as the new Stable branch brought many important changes in Debian, but for those distributions based on Debian Testing, the main change was the introduction of many many updated packages that remained locked in the Unstable branch because of the pre-release testing freeze. We decided to not introduce significant changes on our side in this new release, and we just wanted to focus on making existing things better. The most evident change is the introduction of the ARC theme, while also the auto-updater received an important change to show the progress of system upgrades. The old Linux 4.9 kernel was replaced with the new 4.11 branch, and this introduced a better support for many devices." Further details can be found in the project's release notes. Matthew Miller has announced the launch of Fedora 26. The Fedora distribution is available in three editions: Workstation, Server and Atomic Host and can be run on a variety of hardware, including i686, x86_64 and ARM boards. Fedora 26 features a new partition manager in the Anaconda system installer along with many package updates: "First, of course, we have thousands of improvements from the various upstream software we integrate, including new development tools like GCC 7, Golang 1.8, and Python 3.6. We’ve added a new partitioning tool to Anaconda (the Fedora installer) - the existing workflow is great for non-experts, but this option will be appreciated by enthusiasts and sysadmins who like to build up their storage scheme from basic building blocks. F26 also has many under-the-hood improvements, like better caching of user and group info and better handling of debug information. As the FreeBSD team prepares fr the release f FreeBSD 11.1, the developers have been hard at work fixing lingering bugs. The FreeBSD team has announced a new release candidate, 11.1-RC2, for testing. The new development snapshot includes a number of bug fixes since the previous release candidate: "A summary of changes since 11.1-RC1 includes: VM subsystem fixes. A double-free in RPC code has been corrected, as well as a sanity check ensuring the return value of seteuid() is evaluated. A gpart issue with systems with SD cards as the primary drive has been corrected. A fix to correct IPv6 header parsing. A fix to correct REPORT ZONE commands sent to the da driver. A possible panic in camperiphfree() has been fixed. A potential panic on boot triggered by ACPI taskqueue creation has been fixed. Bug fixes in C++ symbol demangling. The ena driver has been added.
