Our Lives Together – Alias and Daredevil Show Both Sides of the Door

BERJAYA

In this feature, I will spotlight some of the more interesting examples of shared comic book universes. You know, crossovers that aren’t exactly crossovers.

Today, based on a suggestion by reader Trevor R., we take a look at a sly “crossover” between Daredevil and Alias.

Went to Tell Everybody – Mike Baron’s Flash Run

BERJAYA

In this feature, I ask comic creators that I like a lot to recommend a great comic that they’d like to see spotlighted. They pick the comic and then I write a review of the comic (of course, this runs the risk of them picking a comic that I don’t like, but there’s so many great comics out there to pick from that I find it hard to believe that that will ever actually happen).

I was doing this as a weekly feature earlier this year, but I didn’t think it was getting enough attention, so I figured I would instead do it every day this month, make it a bit of a thing. Draw some attention to these great books being recommended!

Today’s creator is Marc Guggenheim. A longtime TV writer (including co-creating the inventive series Eli Stone), Guggenheim has also written a number of comic books over the years, including stints on Wolverine, Blade and the Justice Society. He was even part of the original “Brain Trust” on Amazing Spider-Man for Brand New Day. In recent years, his interest in comics and TV/film has come together as he was one of the screenwriters on the Green Lantern film and he is the showrunner on Arrow as well as being heavily involved in the upcoming Legends of Tomorrow spinoff. Amusingly enough for a guy so big on DC’s TV series, he is also soon to be writing an ongoing series for Marvel, Agents of SHIELD, which is based on one of THEIR TV series. He also has a series at Oni called Stringers. Marc’s choice was Mike Baron’s Flash run.

Just a Reminder – The Sons of the Serpent Are Really Old Characters and Very Bad Guys

BERJAYA

This is the first in a new feature that will likely be very infrequent. It’s just designed as a sort of reminder about the past when certain comic book plots of the present get reactions that seem to suggest that people aren’t up on their history of the character(s) in question.

Today we look at the fuss over Captain America fighting against the Sons of the Serpent.

Went to Tell Everybody – Rodd Racer

BERJAYA

Today’s creator is Jae Lee. Jae Lee broke into comics in the early 1990s during his early 20s with a striking run on Namor. This soon led to his own creator-owned series, Hellshock, at Image Comics. Later in the decade, he won an Eisner for Best New Series for the Inhumans with Paul Jenkins. Since then, Lee has remained one of the very top artists in the business, always in demand for top projects by both DC and Marvel. Jae’s choice is Rodd Racer by Toby Cypress.

Go On and Submit a Story for the Gwan Anthology

BERJAYA

Jerome Walford (of Nowhere Man fame) is doing an anthology called Gwan and he’s looking for open submissions for comic stories. As Jerome describes it:

The Gwan Anthology will be a collection of creator-owned shorts centered on the themes of foreign lands, the immigrant experience, and cultural fusion. The anthology will highlight and celebrate work that expresses both the joys and the challenges of the immigrant/expat experience. It is open to all genres: sci-fi, fantasy, or slice of life, as well as to both real and imagined experiences.

Check out the full press release here.

The Wrong Side: Swordsman vs. the West Coast Avengers

BERJAYA

In this feature, I examine comic book fights that were particularly notable in the wrong side winning (or at least that the fight wasn’t won the “right” way). This really isn’t a big deal, of course, as it doesn’t really matter if the “wrong” person won a fight. But it’s fun to talk about!

If you want to suggest a fight for future inclusion in this feature, drop me a line at bcronin@comicbookresources.com. Don’t suggest a fight in the comments!

This week, based on a suggestion from reader David P (a different David P. from last week – a lot of David Ps out there, I guess), we take a look at the Swordsman kicking the West Coast Avengers’ asses…

Went to Tell Everybody – Roxanna and the Quest for the Time-Bird Books 1-4

BERJAYA

In this feature, I ask comic creators that I like a lot to recommend a great comic that they’d like to see spotlighted. Today’s creator is Stephanie Hans. Hans began doing book cover illustrations and that work has brought her to drawing some magnificent covers for Marvel, Dark Horse, Boom!, IDW and more (she also happened to work on a little novel that I hope you all are quite familiar with). More recently, she has taken his striking painted style to interior comic book work, most notably on the Angela ongoing series. Stephanie chose a number of comics to spotlight, and I’ll feature her comments on the other comics in this piece, as well, but the specific comic I’m spotlighting today is Roxanna and the Quest for the Time-Bird by artist Régis Loisel and writer Olivier Le Tendre.

Went to Tell Everybody – Incognito

BERJAYA

In this feature, I ask comic creators that I like a lot to recommend a great comic that they’d like to see spotlighted. Today’s creator is Dan Panosian. Panosian broke into comics in the early 1990s as a very young man, working on pretty much every major Marvel comic book character (Spider-Man, X-Men, etc.). After taking a break from comics for a number of years to become a successful commercial artist (as well as game designer and storyboard artist). He returned to comic books about a decade ago and his maturation as an artist has been astonishing. He has worked on a number of comics for Marvel, DC, IDW, Boom!, Dark Horse and Dynamite. He does a lot of awesome covers and most recently drew a Red Sonja/Conan crossover. Dan’s choice is Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ Incognito (colors by Val Staples).

House to Astonish Episode 138

Plenty of juicy comics chat for you this time round, with discussion of Fox’s two new X-Men TV shows, the upcoming Power Man & Iron Fist series, AfterShock Comics’ announcement of American Monster, DC’s new Wonder Woman digital series, and all the recent comings and goings on Marvel’s movies and TV shows. We’ve also got reviews of I Hate Fairyland and Uncanny Avengers, and the Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe hasn’t worked out all the bugs. All this plus Marc Alessi’s crossword solving service, the canon of the Gruffalo extended universe and the weird soapy taste of the Inhumans.

The Abandoned An’ Forsaked – So is Cannonball an External or What?

BERJAYA

In this feature we examine comic book stories and ideas that were not only abandoned, but also had the stories/plots specifically “overturned” by a later writer (as if they were a legal precedent). Click here for an archive of all the previous editions of The Abandoned An’ Forsaked. Feel free to e-mail me at bcronin@comicbookresources.com if you have any suggestions for future editions of this feature.

Lots of people have asked me about this one over the years, but I’ve always been unsure where to include it. I guess I’m going with here!

Today’s creator is Paige Braddock. Braddock is perhaps best known as the creator of Jane’s World, a nifty comic strip that has been running since 1998. 1998, people!! Braddock also did the science fiction series, The Martian Confederacy, with writer Jason McNamara and the children’s graphic novel, Stinky Cecil, earlier this year. She has also been the Creative Director at Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates for nearly two decades now. Paige’s choice is Meaty Yogurt by Megan Gedris.
