Leafs Find Goals In Quest To Beat Oilers

Five goals from five different players boosted the Maple Leafs to a 5-1 lead before Saturday night's game with the Edmonton Oilers was halfway done, and Toronto held on for the 6-4 win. Phil Kessel had two tallies for the Leafs, while Nikolai Kulemin, Tyler Bozak, Jamie Lundmark and Mikhail Grabovski each added a goal.

The high-scoring Golden State Warriors offence felt right at home against the porous Raptors defensive corps on Saturday night, as 35 points from Stephen Curry and 31 from Monta Ellis led the home team to an easy 124-112 win in Oakland. Ricky Romero battled wind and control problems to pitch four shutout innings as the Toronto Blue Jays topped the Atlanta Braves, 3-0. Romero, who is making a bid for an Opening Day assignment, walked four, but allowed only two hits before turning the ball over to Dana Eveland, who pitched three shutout innings with four strikeouts.

Alberta skip Kevin Koe has survived two playoff games to advance to the final at the Tim Hortons Brier, preserving his province's hopes of claiming its third consecutive Canadian men's curling championship. Koe pounded an upstart team from Northern Ontario 10-3 Saturday night in Halifax.
Ottawa's Kristina Groves won the women's 1,500 metres at a long-track speedskating World Cup on Saturday, clinching the overall title ahead of fellow Canadian Christine Nesbitt. Groves won in one minute 58.15 seconds, ahead of Martina Sablikovava of the Czech Republic and Winnipeg's Brittany Schussler.

Canada's sledge hockey team opened up its gold medal defence at the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver, with a 4-0 win over Italy in preliminary round play on Saturday. Greg Westlake of Oakville, Ontario scored two goals in the third period to lead the way.

Long track speed skater Jeremy Wotherspoon announced his retirement Saturday, ending a remarkable career that is considered one of the best in the sport's history. Wotherspoon leaves as perhaps the greatest sprinter of all-time. The Red Deer, Alta., native holds the 500-metre world record of 34.03 seconds.
