Initially billed as ‘West Edinburgh Busways’ (WEBS), Edinburgh Fastlink was Scotland’s first Guided Busway project and was managed for City of Edinburgh Council by a specialist team at tie limited. The scheme was introduced as part of a strategy to improve and provide public transport choice as a means of redressing the current imbalance of dependency on private car usage in Edinburgh.
Edinburgh Fastlink is a dedicated 1.5 km, two-lane guided busway. Vehicles which use the busway are fitted with specially designed wheels. In addition, Fastlink comprises 3.45 km of associated on-street bus priority measures, delivering an 8 km bus corridor stretching from the city centre to Edinburgh Park.
Launched by City of Edinburgh Council and tie in December 2004 under the ‘Transport Edinburgh’ banner, Edinburgh Fastlink represents a fast, efficient, modern bus system running between the city centre and outlying areas to the west of the city. Fastlink was specifically designed to save passengers time at peak periods.
tie’s team brought to bear a number of specialist skills including:
- creativity and innovation in delivering a solution to a specific problem
- planning and project management
- all contractor procurement and management
- consultation and stakeholder liaison
- guideway operation
