The January 23 fire at Chambers Street resulted in extensive damage to the signal and relay system that controls the train traffic on the lines. As a result, we are severely limited as to the number of trains that can operate safely along the line.
What's happening now
While efforts to make temporary repairs to the signal system are underway, for the next few months service will remain suspended (but replaced in Brooklyn by the between Euclid Avenue and Jay Street) and service will continue to experience extensive delays and crowding. We apologize for the inconvenience this situation is causing our customers.
Looking ahead
As work continues, we expect to increase the number of trains that we can place back into service, and perhaps bring limited service back. Our goal, short of being able to replace the entire network that was destroyed by the fire, is to restore enough signaling equipment to provide 60% of line service the first week of February. Following that, 80% of service should return within the next three months with full restoration of both and service within six to nine months.
