About The FAQ

(items marked with NEW! were added or changed recently)

Is the Closed Caption FAQ a commercial enterprise?

This FAQ was not created as a promotional tool or to make money. In fact, I no longer work for or have a financial interest in any company in the captioning industry. I've put many, many hours into the FAQ, and it's free. You have no obligation to do anything but read it. If you find the information useful and interesting, though, please take a moment to check out my books, Inside Captioning and Alternative Realtime Careers. Thanks!

The more astute readers among you will notice that there's now a banner ad on the front page of this FAQ. It pays for my costs to keep the Caption FAQ on the Web. Do me a favor and click on it.

Why did I create this FAQ?

Like most FAQ authors on the Web, this document came about because I spent much of my time answering these kind of questions anyway. Why not write them down?

How do I know all this stuff?

Saks Award

Part of it comes from being in this industry since 1989 and developing captioning products. Part of it comes from audience feedback from my seminars and articles about captioning, and specifically from the column I write for the Journal of Court Reporting and the one I used to write for Newswaves.

A few specific sources of data (and my knowledge) include:

  • Jeff Hutchins of VITAC (a veritable font of captioning knowledge)
  • David Blanchette (techie programmer type)
  • The good folks on CompuServe's CRForum
  • The people on Joe Clark's "Media Access" mailing list
  • ...and many captioners whose documents I shamelessly plagiarized, including Patty White of Caption Colorado and Kevin Daniel of Bay Area Captioning.

Why is so much of this FAQ just American?

The terminology and focus of this FAQ is currently Line 21 captioning on NTSC video - which means mostly the United States and Canada. This is an inevitable consequence of having an author from the U.S. I heartily encourage anyone with information on captioning elsewhere in the world to send it to me for incorporation in this FAQ, and I will add it to the next revision.
