Note: Named after a Celtic abbey founded by St. Columbarus on the site of the hermitage of the missionary Irish monk, St. Gall. The Benedictine abbey was founded here ca. 720. Important center of learning in the Middle Ages. From 1800, it became an important center of linen, cotton, muslin, and lace production.
