Wikimedia Foundation Annual Plan 2026–2027


The Annual Plan is the Wikimedia Foundation’s description of what we hope to achieve in the coming year. The annual planning process focused on involving communities early and often through continuous conversations that ran till 31st May 2026. We discussed how global trends may shape our future, how we can experiment, adapt and respond together.

The journey

We began discussing the ideas that would turn into goals and objectives at Wikimania 2025.

In December 2025, we invited the movement to think with us on-wiki about some of the larger strategic puzzles in the year ahead through questions around global trends affecting the projects, experimentation, newcomers, users with extended rights, collaboration and reading. At the end of April a draft plan was shared and discussions continued on-wiki and in co-created community spaces with the materials evolving and changing based on discussions that continued till the end of May.

In June, the Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation voted unanimously to approve the current draft and budget. Thank you to everyone who contributed your feedback, and for partnering with us in the year ahead.

The engagement

This year's engagement has featured active conversations both on-wiki and in co-created spaces. The number of editors engaging on-wiki was up 112% compared to last year with 308 Wikimedians weighing in on-wiki. This increase was driven mostly by an increase in the number of comments on Meta-Wiki.

~1,478 Wikimedians – up 55% from last year – engaged in co-created community spaces (online calls and in person meetings) that held deep dives into the global trends shaping the plan. The increase here was driven by the annual planning calls also including Bernadette engaging and listening around the puzzle globe.

Next steps

We will soon update this page with a summary of the feedback on the annual plan as a snapshot of the discussions that took place between December to the end of May. This plan is built through continuous conversations and is always evolving.

Since May, there have also been dozens of conversations on specific areas of work in community channels which offer guidance to the Wikimedia Foundation for the year ahead. The Foundation will continue to shape its annual plan work and specific goals based on the feedback shared here and throughout the year, as part of our commitment to evaluate, iterate, and improve.

Co-created community spaces

Staff and leaders from the Wikimedia Foundation joined existing community organized calls for two-way planning around next year’s draft annual plan. Additionally, Foundation staff organized thematic calls that anyone could attend based on their area of interest.
