Albert J. Augustin (* 16. September 1959 in Würzburg) ist ein deutscher Augenarzt und war bis 2024 Direktor der Augenklinik des Klinikums Karlsruhe.

Leben

Albert J. Augustin wuchs in Sulzfeld am Main in Unterfranken auf. Nach seinem Abitur 1979 am Armin-Knab-Gymnasium in Kitzingen studierte er Biologie und Chemie an der Universität Würzburg. Anschließend studierte er bis 1989 Medizin an den Universitäten Essen, Heidelberg und Würzburg. 1990 folgten die Promotion in Medizin an der Universität Würzburg mit einer Arbeit über Die Beeinflussung der Lipidperoxidation beim mesenterialen Okklusionsschock und die Approbation als Arzt.

Wissenschaftliches und ärztliches Werk

Bis 1991 arbeitete Augustin als Postdoktorand in Würzburg, Abteilung Physiologie bei J. Lutz zum Thema Oxidative tissue damage following ischemia and reperfusion of the intestine; Burdening of the monocyte-macrophage-system by perfluorochemicals. 1995 wurde er Facharzt für Augenheilkunde nach seiner Ausbildung in der Augenklinik Bonn bei M. Spitznas. 1996 wurde seine Habilitationsschrift Investigation of oxidative and inflammatory tissue damage in hereditary retinal diseases, diseases of the retinal pigment epithelium, experimental uveitis, and dry eyes angenommen. Er erhielt die Venia legendi als Privatdozent für Augenheilkunde. Zudem wurde er Oberarzt an der Universitätsaugenklinik in Bonn.

Von 1998 bis 2001 arbeitete er als Professor für Augenheilkunde an der Universität Mainz. Seit 2001 ist er Direktor der Augenklinik des Städtischen Klinikums Karlsruhe.[1] Augustin ist dazu Visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology, Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv.[2]

Augustin hat diverse Publikationen verfasst und ist Mitglied im Editorial Board zahlreicher Fachzeitschriften. Er ist Forscher und Gutachter in den Bereichen Pathobiochemistry and pathophysiology of oxidative damage to the eye, Biochemistry of the tear fluid, Immunology of experimental lens induced and autoimmune uveitis und Immunology of Graefe’s disease.[3] Augustin hat für sein Wirken zahlreiche Auszeichnungen erhalten.

Augustin übt mannigfaltige Tätigkeiten in wissenschaftlichen Gesellschaften aus, zum Beispiel seit 2015 als Vize-Präsident der Deutschsprachigen Gesellschaft für Intraokularlinsen-Implantation, DGVII[4] und seit 2018 im wissenschaftlichen Komitee des International Congress on OCT Angiography, En Face OCT and Advances in OCT. Außerdem ist er im Bruno Lumbroso Lecture Committee und im wissenschaftlichen Komitee der FLORetina. Society.[5]

Augustin wurde vor allem bekannt durch seine Entwicklung der Kombinationstherapie bei altersbedingter feuchter Makuladegeneration.
