Help:Abstract articles
As a pilot, some Wikipedias will be able to opt-in to display abstract articles that are written on Abstract Wikipedia on their own wiki, integrated as if they were regular articles. We're excited to partner with pilot communities to see whether this is valuable to them.
Abstract article rendering
[edit]Abstract articles are created, edited, and managed entirely on Abstract Wikipedia, using the data and words from Wikidata and the images from Wikimedia Commons.
Abstract articles are displayed only when a wiki has opted-in for that article to be shown, and only show when the wiki doesn't yet have a local article at that title. If you create a local article, that will always be shown instead (like Commons files or Meta user pages, local "wins").
Every abstract article has a banner on it explaining that it's taken from Abstract Wikipedia, and when it was last updated. This also lets you disable it if the article is no longer wanted by your community, or temporarily if something is badly wrong. Regular re-generation updates happen to each article in each language every week, and will reflect the article as it was at that point, until the next update.
Language coverage
[edit]In the pilot period, only a handful of languages are used to generate the candidate articles. As of 2026-08-05, they are:
- dag/Dagbani
- de/German
- en/English
- es/Spanish
- fr/French
- ha/Hausa
- ig/Igbo
- ml/Malayalam
As we add further pilot communities, we will add their languages to the list. If your community would like to take part in a later phase, please join in and post about this on the project chat where folks can help you get started.
Long-term, after the pilot if it is successful, this will expand to most/all Wikipedia languages, with community control without going through the development team.
Wikidata topic coverage

Once we have selected the pilot communities, we will add a few topics they suggest to the list. If you think there's a good example article to add, please join in and post about what this on the project chat where the community can help decide the early, limited set.

Enabling an article on your wiki
[edit]If you are a sysop on a pilot community, you can go to Special:PreviewAbstract to see a list of potential articles to integrate. Click on one to see how it is currently showing. If it is good enough for your community to show to your readers, you can click the link in the banner which will take you to Special:CommunityConfiguration/AbstractWikiOptedInArticles where you can add and remove opted-in articles. Any sysop can add and remove articles; if your community wants to make this available more widely, please ask.
Disabling an article on your wiki
[edit]If you are a sysop on a pilot community, you can click the link in the banner on the displayed abstract article which will take you to Special:CommunityConfiguration/AbstractWikiOptedInArticles where you can add and remove opted-in articles.
