Women's Audio Mission
Changing the face of sound
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
The voices of women, girls, and gender-expansive people are nearly silent in the soundtrack of our lives, discouraging them from becoming the leaders and innovators we need to create systemic change. WAM was founded in direct response to the widespread and staggering gender inequality in sound: • Fewer than 5% of the people creating and shaping all of the sounds, messages and media in the soundtrack of our lives are women/gender-diverse people. • In the music industry, only 2.6% are music producers, 12.6% are songwriters, and 21.6% are artists • Women are nearly half of US workforce but only 27% of STEM workers
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Girls on the Mic
Girls on the Mic provides 2,000+ underserved SF Bay Area girls and gender-expansive youth (96% low income/93% BIPOC/ages 11-18) per year with completely free, hands-on media arts & music production training in a professional studio environment. WAM has partnered with 50+ schools in the San Francisco, Oakland, & San Jose Unified School Districts over the years to deliver an after-school curriculum rooted in the National Media Arts/California Performing Arts Standards & provides access to media technology, instruments, & young women/gender-expansive artist mentors. Through hands-on media projects, GotM inspires youth to demand space and amplify their voices to become the next generation of music recording artists, producers, and engineers.
WAM Studio
WAM’s world-class recording studios/training facilities are the only professional recording studio in the world run entirely by women/gender-expansive staff. The studio has a vast collection of amazing audio gear and microphones and has previously hosted projects by Beyonce's Band, Toro y Moi, Alanis Morrissette, R.E.M., Timbaland, and Radiohead. In 2019, WAM’s San Francisco studio was chosen as SF Weekly’s Best of SF in the category “Best Hope For Future Of Music.” WAM’s unique studios are home to a rigorous internship and training environment that cultivates women/gender-expansive recording engineers and producers and provides a low-cost, high-quality recording environment for independent artists. WAM has had the pleasure of working on many award-winning projects such as GRAMMY winner Kronos Quartet, a Grammy-winning album by Angelique Kidjo, an Academy Award-nominated soundtrack to the film “Dirty Wars”, and Vietnamese composer Van-Anh Vo, chosen as one of the 50 best albums by NPR.
Internship Program
Our internship program is widely recognized in the audio and music production industries for the caliber of training, range of activities, overall experience, as well as job placement opportunities. Past interns have gone on to positions with such companies as Dolby, Pixar, Apple, Sony, Google, and Pandora, as well as most of the premier venues for music and performance in the San Francisco Bay Area. In addition to core responsibilities, WAM interns also take advantage of special tours of our partners’ labs and spaces (e.g., Dolby, Meyer Sound, Arup, and Facebook), behind-the-scenes access to sound checks for major acts (e.g., Janelle Monáe, Sheila E., St. Beauty), private professional development opportunities with industry leaders, and much more.
Recording Residencies
WAM Recording Residencies offer primarily underrepresented Bay Area women and gender-expansive musicians and performers free recording services and performance opportunities, while providing critical work experience and professional credits to emerging women/gender-expansive producers and recording engineers. These sought-after residencies include professional development opportunities, artist promotion, performances, and community forums.
