The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) is the world’s highest-level decision-making body for matters related to the environment, with a universal membership of all 193 Member States.

It sets the global environmental agenda, provides overarching policy guidance, and defines policy responses to address emerging environmental challenges. It undertakes policy review, dialogue and the exchange of experiences, sets the strategic guidance on the future direction of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and fosters partnerships for achieving environmental goals and resource mobilization.

The seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) took place from 8 to 12 December 2025 at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

Upcoming sessions of UNEA:

The eight session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-8) will take place from 6 to 10 December 2027 at the UNEP headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. UNEA-8 will be preceded by the eighth session of the Open-ended Committee of Permanent Representatives which will be held back-to-back from 29 November to 3 December 2027.

UNEA-9 and future regular sessions of the Assembly will commence on the last Monday in February in odd-numbered years (UNEA-7 Decision 7/7).

Regional Ministerial Environment Forums and Consultative Meetings

Prior to a UNEA session, Regional Ministerial Environment Forums serve as a platform for Member States to contribute regional perspectives, and Regional Consultative Meetings bring together regional representatives of the Major Groups and Stakeholders to participate in preparatory discussions.

Several intergovernmental, consultative and participatory processes have been directly mandated by UNEA resolutions. These resolutions request the UNEP Secretariat to facilitate and convene additional consultations and negotiations to advance on negotiated outcomes and agreements.
