Reigning title holder Zhao Xintong is out of the 2026 World Snooker Championship following a 13-10 quarter-final defeat to Shaun Murphy at the Crucible Theatre.

Zhao - who came into this tournament as the outright favourite following a golden spell of results on the pro tour in recent months - is the latest player to fall victim to the 'Crucible Curse'; no first-time world champion at the Crucible has managed to successfully defend the title, and snooker's most famous hex remains undefeated.

Chinese ace Zhao created history last year in becoming the first Asian winner of the Championship, and heading into his tie with Murphy was on an 11-match winning streak in the tournament.

It was business as usual early on for the 29-year-old as he fashioned a break of 122 in the opening frame before establishing a 3-0 lead, but Murphy flipped the opening session on its head by taking the five remaining frames of the morning.

Returning a few hours later for their evening session, Zhao got to within a frame of his opponent on three occasions, but each time Murphy pulled away.

However, world number four Zhao registered a run of 117 before taking the final frame of the night to finally restore parity at 8-8 and set up a grandstand finish for their concluding session on Wednesday afternoon.

Trying to get in front for the first time since 3-2, Zhao played a poor safety shot in the opening frame of their final act and was duly punished by Murphy who crafted a classy 96.

Zhao drew level again after a 71 clearance, but an effort of 80, followed by a frame victory on the colours pushed Murphy two away from the target, and once more two clear of his rival. Following their final interval, an inspired Murphy reached the hill after a contribution of 70.

With his back pressed against the wall, Zhao produced a swashbuckling 81 to get to double figures and keep his hands on the world crown for a little bit longer, but Murphy got the job done in the next with the aid of a 69.

Winner of this title in 2005 as a 22-year-old qualifier, Murphy stands two big steps away from joining an exclusive club of multiple-time world champions.

Since his finest day in the sport over two decades ago, the Englishman has been back to the final on three further occasions, although has had to settle for silver each time. His last runner-up finish came in 2021 - before this year that was the last time he had been past the last 16 in Sheffield.

'The Magician' has been one of the standout performers of the professional season having won the British Open and been runner-up at the Xi'an Grand Prix and German Masters.

It represents a shift in fortunes for the 43-year-old, who earlier this season briefly slipped outside of the world's top 16 for the first time in over 19 years.

Murphy will face either Neil Robertson or John Higgins in the best of 33 semi-finals.
