Heartbreak for Jimmy White on opening day of World Championship qualifying

The ever-popular White - runner-up at the Crucible Theatre on six occasions - was aiming to reach the World Championship main draw for the first time since 2006, but required to navigate all four rounds of the qualifying gauntlet held at the English Institute of Sport.
Facing an up-and-coming opponent who was 42 years his junior - and who missed out on Crucible qualification last year by a single frame - White got off to a brilliant start with a counter-attacking break of 72 to take the opening frame.

The 63-year-old then doubled his lead before Gao got on the board. However, ‘The Whirlwind’ strung together three consecutive frames, aided with efforts of 52 and 60, to take control at 5-1 up, and guarantee himself a first-session lead.
But Gao importantly deposited all three of the remaining frames from the session, crafting a break of 127 in the eighth and then coming from behind to secure a tense ninth.
On resumption in the evening, Gao continued his momentum, racking up another trio of successive frames (breaks of 54 and 92) to move 7-5 ahead.
Former UK and Masters champion White, taking part in his 46th World Championship campaign, stopped the rot, replying with back-to-back frames to restore parity at 7-7.

The two then traded frames - Gao twice nudging back ahead with breaks of 107 and 58, White responded with efforts of 55 and 54 - to set up a grandstand deciding frame finish.
Gao got in first after a brilliant opening pot but couldn’t make a frame-winning contribution. White sank a fantastic long red to open his account, but lost ideal position and broke down.
Later, it looked as if Gao was about to go through as he left his peer needing penalty points, but White laid a brilliant snooker on the final green behind the blue. Gao missed, and left White on the green, with a half-opportunity for an incredible turnaround.
However, after sinking the green, White missed the brown with one eye on trying to dislodge the blue that was near a side cushion. Gao then unexpectedly missed the brown, but so did White as he went for glory with a very difficult pot.

The brown stayed near the black pocket, and much to Gao’s relief he potted it before doing likewise with a long blue, which cued White’s gracious concession.
Next up for Gao is a meeting with another very experienced campaigner in Mark Davis.
DRAMA UNTIL THE VERY END! 😅

World Championship history made by Szubarczyk
Elsewhere on day one in Sheffield, Polish teenager Michal Szubarczyk became the youngest player in history to win a match in snooker's blue riband event.
Rookie professional Szubarczyk - who turned 15-years-old in January - defeated three-time world women's champion Ng On Yee, 10-7.

A trio of half-century breaks helped the youngster establish a 3-0 lead before Hong Kong's On Yee restored parity.
Szubarczyk then strung together five consecutive frames for 8-3, although On Yee - who last month won the British Women's Open - put together another three-frame sequence of her own to get to within two of her opponent.
However, the Pole secured two of the next three frames to rewrite the record books and set up a second qualifying round meeting with Sanderson Lam.
The first player to win a match at the 2026 World Snooker Championship was Peter Lines who dispatched Jonas Luz, 10-2.

56-year-old Lines - who is competing in the tournament as an invited amateur - top scored with a break of 106. He first won a world championship match at the qualifiers for the 1992 edition.
Another amateur to progress on the opening day, although at a very different stage of his career, was 18-year-old Wang Xinbo.
Runner-up at the World Snooker Federation Junior and Open Championship earlier this year, the Chinese teenager racked up runs of 95, 62, 65, 78, 73, 111, 53, 80 and 51 in defeating Mitchell Mann, 10-4.
It was his second victory over Mann, having whitewashed him 5-0 at the recent World Open.
