Politician. A graduate of Boston University, he became a lawyer and was a state representative from 1940 to 1942. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. He later was elected a state Senator, serving from 1949 to 1953. He became a city court judge in Bridgeport before running unsuccessfully for mayor of Bridgeport in 1955. Two years later he defeated the 24-year incumbent and would be the city's mayor from 1957 to 1965. During a portion of his years as mayor, 1962 to 1966, he was the lieutenant governor under Governor John Dempsey, back when the post was part-time. In 1966 he was appointed a Superior Court judge. He was a senior resident judge in Bridgeport when in 1976 he was disbarred and fined after being found guilty of notarizing a forged liquor license renewal application. He appealed the decision and remained a member of the judiciary, though he did not hear any cases up to his retirement in 1980. Having moved to California in 1989, he had fought cancer for several years and died of pneumonia.
