    Salvador Luria, born in 1912, was awarded the 1969 medicine prize. Together with Max Delbrück, Luria demonstrated that bacterial resistance to phage infection occurred through genetic mutation, and that bacteria were suitable subjects for genetics research.

    On International we remember these wise words from peace laureate Willy Brandt. Brandt was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1971 "for paving the way for a meaningful dialogue between East and West."

    Is this one of the most famous equations in physics? The Schrödinger equation is a cornerstone of quantum physics - the analogue of Newton's second law for quantum mechanics. Its derivation led to Schrödinger, born on this day in 1887, receiving the 1933 Nobel Prize in Physics.

    Erwin Schrödinger's lectures, 'What is Life?', later published in book form, influenced a wide range of scientists including James Watson and Francis Crick, who wrote to Schrödinger on his 66th birthday (12 August 1953), thanking him for the inspiration.
