The Oranjemund Town Council has now officially been welcomed to the family of the Association for Local Authorities in Namibia (ALAN). The welcoming ceremony took place during a glitzy Gala dinner event organized by ALAN and hosted by the Mayor of Lüderitz, Hon. Suzan Ndjaleka at the Nest Hotel in Lüderitz a fortnight ago.

The first ever Africa Day of Decentralisation and Local Development was celebrated on Friday, 10 August 2012, under the theme Financing decentralisation, public service delivery and local development.

The Africa Day of Decentralisation and Local Development was adopted by the Africa Union (AU) at the January 2012 Summit of Heads of State and Government following a recommendation made by the All Africa Ministerial Conference on Decentralisation and Local Development (AMCOD) at its second ordinary session held in Maputo, Mozambique, from 8 to 10 August 2010.

Increasing numbers of rural dwellers move to town in search of employment. They are driven by the scarcity of rural resources, and attracted by urban life. Since 1991, Namibia’s urban population more than doubled. At present, 42% of the country’s 2.1 million live in urban areas.

Namibia’s cities face severe challenges. As informal settlements of the marginalized poor grow in number and size, affluent suburbs also expand. Cities grow apart, spatially and socially, reflecting intensifying social inequalities of post- independence Namibian society.
