IIT GATE 2012 - Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is entrance examination and scholarship test jointly held by
Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore and
Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). GATE 2012 is organized by
Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Madras.
GATE 2012 examination shall identify meritorious and motivated candidates for admission to Postgraduate Programs in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Pharmacy and related disciplines at National level. On the basis of Score in GATE candidates shall take admission into Post Graduate Engineering and Sciences Programs. GATE 2012 Score shall also be valid for admission into Doctoral degree programs is sciences.
Non GATE qualified candidates can apply for Doctoral degree program if they have Post Graduate qualification in engineering sciences. The MHRD offers scholarships and assistant ship to GATE qualified candidates. Many institutes and universities ask for GATE Score for admission in fellowship and research programs.

IIT GATE 2012 Online Application Process
The application for IIT GATE 2012 has to be made through an Online Application Form. The following tips must be followed by aspirants while filing the IIT GATE 2012 Online Application Form:
- Candidates must go to the link "Apply Online". Register oneself by
entering name, date of birth, password and email id. Then fill in the
ONLINE application form, proceed to make the payment of application fee
using Payment Gateway or Challan Payment options.
- Candidates must NOT attest the photograph for the application
form.Candidates must make the payment for application fee during the
ONLINE application process by choosing one of the following options:
a. Payment Gateway: Netbanking through the payment Gateway of Bill Desk.
b. Challan Payment: Payment by cash at any branch of ICICI Bank, Indian Bank and State Bank of India.
- After completing the ONLINE application, choose Payment Gateway option and proceed.
1. At the end of this process, a pdf file will be generated with the following pages:

2. Candidates can take a print out of the entire file and save this pdf file for future reference.
3. Paste your recent photograph (3 cm x 4 cm) in the designated place of Page-2. Sign at the designated places of Page-2. Paste Page-4 on top of a A4-size envelope.
4. The GATE copy of the above Application (after pasting the photo and signing) with appropriate enclosures must be sent by Speed Post (preferably) or by Registered Post to The Chairman, GATE of the Zone, where the candidate prefers to appear for the examination.
- Candidates choosing to make payment through a bank challan should do the following:

3. The bank challan (Page-5) will be printed in triplicate. Take it to any branch of ICICI Bank, Indian Bank or State Bank of India (as opted by the candidate) and pay the fee. Bank will retain a copy with them and will return two copies to you. Retain the Candidate's copy with you and attach the GATE Copy with the application form.
4. Paste your recent photograph (3 cm x 4 cm) in the designated place of Page-2. Sign at the designated places of Page-2. Paste Page-4 on top of an A4-size envelope.
5. The GATE copy of the above Application Form (after pasting the photo and signing) with appropriate enclosures must be sent by Speed Post (preferably) or by Registered Post to The Chairman, GATE of the Zone, where the candidate prefers to appear for the examination.
- The status of your application will be put up on the zonal GATE website.
Click on the link "Application Status" and follow the instructions.
Generally, the status of your application will be put up within two days
after the receipt of the application in the Zonal GATE offices. After
completing all the steps upto pdf application form generation in ONLINE
application process, candidates can only download the application form
and cannot modify the data. One can create a new application by
registering once again if you are accessing the website on or before 17
Oct 2011.
IIT GATE 2012 Eligibility Criteria
Candidates who posses any of of the following eligibility criteria can appear in GATE 2012
- Bachelor's degree holders in Engineering/Technology/Architecture (4 years after 10+2).
- Master's degree holders in any branch of Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Applications or equivalent.
- Candidates in the second or higher year of the Four-year Integrated
Master's degree programme (Post-B.Sc.) in Engineering/Technology or in
the third or higher year of Five-year Integrated Master's degree
programme and Dual Degree programme in Engineering/Technology.
- Candidates with qualifications obtained through examinations
conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSC/AICTE (e.g. AMIE
by IE(I), AMICE(I) by the Institute of Civil Engineers (India)-ICE(I))
as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech. Those who have completed section A or
equivalent of such professional courses are also eligible.
Note: Candidates who are in the final year of final semester of Qualifying examination can also apply.
IIT GATE 2012 Admit Card
Admit card can only be downloaded from the zonal GATE websites from 2nd January 2012. Sending Admit cards by post has been discontinued. The candidates must bring the admit card at the test center along with at least one original (not photocopied / scanned copy) and valid (not expired) photo identification.
One of the following photo identifications is permitted:
- Driving license
- Passport
- PAN Card
- Voter ID
- College ID
- Employee identification card
- or a notarized Affidavit with Photo, Signature, Date of Birth and Residential Address.
Note: Photocopies of the original identification document are not acceptable. Candidates will not be permitted to take the test if original and valid photo identification is not presented.

GATE 2012 Pattern for Papers: AG, AR, BT, CE, CH, CS, CY, EC, EE, IN, MA, ME, MN, MT, PH and PI
There will be a total of 65 questions carrying 100 marks.Q.1
to Q.25 (25 questions) carry one mark each (sub-total 25 marks). Q.26
to Q.55 (30 questions) carry two marks each (sub-total 60 marks).
Questions Q.56 - Q.65 belong to General Aptitude (GA). Questions Q.56 -
Q.60 (5 questions) carry 1 mark each (sub-total 5 marks) and questions
Q.61 - Q.65 (5 questions) carry 2-marks each (sub-total 10 marks).
Questions
Q.48 - Q.51 (2 pairs) are common data questions. and question pairs
(Q.52, Q.53) and (Q.54, Q.55) are linked answer questions. The answer to
the second question of the linked answer questions depends on the
answer to the first question of the pair. If the first question in the
linked pair is wrongly answered or is unattempted, then the answer to
the second question in the pair will not be evaluated.
NEGATIVE MARKING:
For Q.1 - Q.25 and Q.56 - Q.60, ? mark will be deducted for each wrong
answer. For Q.26 - Q.51 and Q.61 - Q.65, ? mark will be deducted for
each wrong answer. The question pairs (Q.52, Q.53), and (Q.54, Q.55) are
questions with linked answers. There will be negative marks only for
wrong answer to the first question of the linked answer question pair
i.e. for Q.52 and Q.54, ? mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.
There is no negative marking for Q.53 and Q.55.
Questions on
Engineering Mathematics will carry about 15% of the total marks
(excluding General Aptitude section) in all the papers bearing the codes
AG, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT and PI.
GATE 2012 Pattern for Papers: AE and TFThere
will be a total of 65 questions carrying 100 marks. Q.1 to Q.25 (25
questions) carry one mark each (sub-total 25 marks). Q.26 to Q.55 (30
questions) carry two marks each (sub-total 60 marks). Questions Q.56 -
Q.65 belong to General Aptitude (GA). Questions Q.56 - Q.60 (5
questions) carry 1 mark each (sub-total 5 marks) and questions Q.61 -
Q.65 (5 questions) carry 2-marks each (sub-total 10 marks).
Questions Q.1-Q.25 and Q.31-Q.65 are of multiple choice type. Questions Q.26-Q.30 are of numerical answer type.

Q.54, ? mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. There is no
negative marking for Q.53 and Q.55.
There is no negative marking for numerical answer type questions Q.26-Q.30.
Questions
on Engineering Mathematics will carry about 15% of the total marks
(excluding General Aptitude section) in all the papers bearing the codes
AE and TF
GATE 2012 Pattern for Paper: GGThere
are a total of 65 questions carrying 100 marks. Apart from General
Aptitude (GA), the question paper consists of two parts: Part A and Part
B. Part A is common for all candidates. Part B contains two sections:
Section 1 (Geology) and Section 2 (Geophysics). Candidates will have to
attempt questions in Part A and either Section 1 or Section 2 in Part B.
Part
A consists of 25 questions; all questions carry 1-mark each (sub-total
25 marks). Each of the sections (Section 1 and Section 2) in Part B
consists of 30 questions; all questions carry 2-marks each (sub-total 60
marks). Questions Q.48 - Q.51 (2 pairs) are common data questions and question pairs (Q.52, Q.53) and (Q.54, Q.55) are linked answer
questions. The answer to the second question of the linked answer
questions pair depends on the answer to the first question of the pair.
If the first question in the linked pair is wrongly answered or is
un-attempted, then the answer to the second question in the pair will
not be evaluated. Questions Q.56 - Q.65 belong to General Aptitude (GA).
Questions Q.56 - Q.60 (5 questions) will carry 1-mark each (sub-total 5
marks) and questions Q.61 - Q.65 (5 questions) will carry 2-marks each
(sub-total 10 marks).
NEGATIVE MARKING:For
Q.1 - Q.25 and Q.56 - Q.60, ? mark will be deducted for each wrong
answer. For Q.26 - Q.51 and Q.61 - Q.65, ? mark will be deducted for

GATE 2012 Pattern for Paper: XE (Engineering Sciences)There are a total of 65 questions carrying 100 marks.
There
are 11 questions carrying 15 marks in XE Engineering Mathematics
section paper (Section A), which is compulsory. Questions Q.1 - Q.7 (7
questions) carry 1-mark each (sub-total 7 marks), and questions Q.8 -
Q.11 (4 questions) carry 2-marks each (sub-total 8 marks).
Each
of the other XE section papers (Sections B through G) contains 22
questions carrying 35 marks. Questions Q.1 - Q.9 (9 questions) carry
1-mark each (sub-total 9 marks). Questions Q.10 - Q.22 (13 questions)
carry 2-marks each (sub-total 26 marks). Questions Q.17 - Q.20 (2 pairs)
are common data questions with 2-marks each. Questions Q.21 and Q.22 (1
pair) are linked answer questions with 2-marks each. The answer to the
second question of the pair of linked answer questions depends on the
answer to the first question of the pair. If the first question in the
pair is wrongly answered or is unattempted, then the answer to the
second question in the pair will not be evaluated.
There are 10
questions carrying 15 marks in General Aptitude (GA), which is
compulsory. Questions Q.1 - Q.5 (5 questions) carry 1-mark each
(sub-total 5 marks), and questions Q.6 - Q.10 (5 questions) carry
2-marks each (sub-total 10 marks).
NEGATIVE MARKING:
In XE Section A, for Q.1 - Q.7, ? mark will be deducted for each wrong
answer and for Q.8 - Q.11, ? mark will be deducted for each wrong
answer. In all other XE section papers (Sections B through G), for Q.1 -
Q.9, ? mark will be deducted for each wrong answer and for Q.10 - Q.20,
? mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. The question pair (Q.21,
Q.22) is a linked answer question. There will be negative marks only
for wrong answer to the first question of the linked answer question
pair. For Q.21, ?mark will be deducted for wrong answer. There is no
negative marking for Q.22. In GA section, for Q.1 - Q.5, ? mark will be
deducted for each wrong answer and for Q.6 - Q.10, ? mark will be
deducted for each wrong answer.
GATE 2012 Pattern for Paper: XL (Life Sciences)There are a total of 65 questions carrying 100 marks.
There
are 15 questions carrying 25 marks in XL Chemistry section paper
(Section H), which is compulsory. Questions Q.1 - Q.5 (5 questions)
carry 1-mark each (sub-total 5 marks). Questions Q.6 - Q.15 (10
questions) carry 2-marks each (sub-total 20 marks). Questions Q.12 and
Q.13 (1 pair) are common data questions with 2-marks each. Questions
Q.14 and Q.15 (1 pair) are linked answer questions with 2-marks each.
The answer to the second question of the pair of linked answer questions
depends on the answer to the first question of the pair. If the first
question in the pair is wrongly answered or is unattempted, then the
answer to the second question in the pair will not be evaluated.
Each
of the other XL section papers (Sections I through M) contains 20
questions carrying 30 marks. Questions Q.1 - Q.10 (10 questions) carry
1-mark each (sub-total 10 marks) and questions Q.11 - Q.20 (10
questions) carry 2-marks each (sub-total 20 marks).
There are 10
questions carrying 15 marks in General Aptitude (GA), which is
compulsory. Questions Q.1 - Q.5 (5 questions) carry 1-mark each
(sub-total 5 marks), and questions Q.6 - Q.10 (5 questions) carry
2-marks each (sub-total 10 marks).
NEGATIVE MARKING: In
XL Section H, for Q.1 - Q.5, ? mark will be deducted for each wrong
answer and for Q.6 - Q.13, ? mark will be deducted for each wrong

IIT GATE 2012 Score
GATE 2012 is being held through following 8 zones constituting
IITs and
IISc. GATE Score card is valid for a duration of 24 Months. GATE 2012 Score shall be made available through following institutes’ GATE Office.
IIT GATE 2012 Results
GATE 2012 Results were announced on March 15, 2012(10:00 Hrs). Candidates should keep in mind the following tips while accessing their results:
- Candidates should enter their date of birth in DD/MM/YY Format only. For instance if date of birth is 1st January, 1981, then it should be entered as 01/01/81.
- All Candidates have alphanumeric registration numbers. They must only enter the numeric part of the registration number.

IIT GATE 2012 Exam Structure
Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is jointly administered by Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). This is a single paper single day examination. Some new specific features of 2012 this year are:
- In GATE 2010, the papers with codes MN and TF had ONLINE examination. In GATE 2011, two additional papers AE and GG will also have ONLINE examination. The ONLINE examination will be conducted in two sessions on Sunday, January 30, 2011. The ONLINE examination in GG and TF will be held in the forenoon session from 09.00 hrs to 12.00 hrs. The ONLINE examination in AE and MN will be held in the afternoon session from 14.00 hrs to 17.00 hrs.
- In AE and TF papers, the question paper will consist of 60 questions of multiple choice type and 5 questions of numerical answer type. For multiple choice type questions, each question will have four choices for the answer. For numerical answer type questions, each question will have a number as the answer.
- In GATE 2011, the OFFLINE examination will be conducted in two sessions on Sunday, February 13, 2011. The OFFLINE examination in AR, BT, CE, CH, CS, ME, PH and PI papers will be held in the forenoon session from 09.00 hrs to 12.00 hrs. The OFFLINE examination in AG, CY, EC, EE, IN, MA, MT, XE and XL will be held in the afternoon session from 14.00 hrs to 17.00 hrs.
- In GATE 2011, Food Technology will be introduced as an optional section in XL paper also. The structure for Food Technology section in XL paper will be the same as the structure of the other optional sections in XL paper. The structure for Food Technology section in XE paper will the same as the structure of the other optional sections in XE paper. The syllabus for the Food Technology section in XE and XL papers is the same.
