Graphic Novel Review: Knights of the Old Republic

Wed, 4 Jan 2012 09:00:00 MDT
BERJAYA PUBLISHED BY: Dark Horse Comics

BRIEF SYNOPSIS: Young Jedi Knights fight the power of the Dark Side of the Force 4,000 years before Luke Skywalker.

PROS: A decent story, elements that have lasted in the Star Wars universe.

CONS: Artwork too complex, weak story, cheesy dialogue.

BOTTOM LINE: Probably the worst installment of the Tales of the Jedi series, though it introduces characters and situations that would live on.

Book Review: Lord of Chaos, by Robert Jordan

Mon, 28 Nov 2011 09:00:00 EST
BERJAYA BRIEF SYNOPSIS: Rand faces his greatest threat yet, hundreds of Aes Sedai who want to subdue him and take him to their tower.

PROS: Great buildup and one of the best endings in the series, pivotal character development, Perrin is back.

CONS: Little action before the ending, not much of interest going on outside of Rand's storyline.

BOTTOM LINE: This one can get a bit boring at times, but it is still one of the best books in the series, due primarily to the amazing ending and the build up to it.

Book Review: The Fires of Heaven, by Robert Jordan

Sat, 26 Nov 2011 09:00:00 EST
BERJAYA BRIEF SYNOPSIS: Rand al'Thor finally begins to fulfill his role as the Dragon Reborn, attempting to unify the lands he is responsible for.

PROS: Progressions of the story, thrilling ending (though not as good as past endings), general drive, buildup, and motivation.

CONS: Little action until the end, lots of conversations.

BOTTOM LINE: While certainly not a book I would skip, Fires of Heaven is not the strongest in the series, even coupled with some of Robert Jordan's strengths in writing cultures, characters, and strong endings.

Video Game Review: Skyrim

Fri, 25 Nov 2011 09:00:00 MDT
BERJAYA DEVELOPED BY: Bethesda Game Studios

PUBLISHED BY: Bethesda Softworks

BRIEF SYNOPSIS: You play as the last Dovakiin (Dragonborn), a dragon hunter anointed by the gods to help fend off the threat Alduin (the Nordic Dragon-god of destruction) poses to Skyrim and Tamriel.

PROS: Immersion, realism, aesthetic variety, gameplay, character development, and UI work better than they did in the previous Elder Scrolls release. It's possibly the most immersive game I've ever played. The world is huge and yet the attention to tiny little details is astounding.

CONS: There are occasional glitches with the laws of physics, but not enough to be terribly distracting. Despite the welcome addition of dual-wielding, the melee combat system is basically just as mediocre as it was in Oblivion. Also, while the menu UI is better than Oblivion's, it still seems like it was built for consoles, and doesn't work with PCs very well.

BOTTOM LINE: Skyrim is escapism to perfection. Just be prepared to spend a lot of time in it if you're going to try it at all. Because you will.

BRIEF SYNOPSIS: An adolescent grows up in the 50's

PROS: The cinematography is absolutely stunning, and the themes are powerful and important.

CONS: Its nonlinear structure and unconventional approach to narrative may be off-putting, boring, or even pretentious to unprepared audiences.

BOTTOM LINE: It's incredibly beautiful and emotionally fulfilling, but not for everyone.

BRIEF SYNOPSIS: The Sith launch their attack on the Republic, and the only people in any position to stop them are Jori, and her brother.

PROS: Some symbolism, good explanation of back story.

CONS: Artwork too complex, weak story, cheesy dialogue.

BOTTOM LINE: Not the best Star Wars story, it covers some important back story, but it doesn't do a good job of it.

Short Story Review: Lost Tribe of the Sith: Savior

Tue, 30 Aug 2011 09:00:00 MDT
BERJAYA This short story is a little different from the others that have preceded it. For one, it takes the form of multiple viewpoints, whereas the previous shorts used one viewpoint only. This brings a sense of urgency, activity, and a build up to the stories climax. Although this is not the last story in the Lost Tribe of the Sith it does have a sense of finality to it. It is the end of this story within the story, like the end of a chapter. Apart from a view moments that seemed confusing, it was well written and engaging.

Savior takes place twenty-five years after the events of the first story in the Lost Tribe of the Sith epic, ten years after the preview installment Paragon

Short Story Review: Lost Tribe of the Sith: Paragon

Sun, 28 Aug 2011 09:00:00 MDT
BERJAYA This short starts out slow but ends with mounting tension, and a twist ending that we haven't seen in the previous two. Once again, the characters do not seem to fit themselves. They seem good, yet they do bad things, they are Sith. But, like the first two, the plot moves quickly and a lot happens in a short space. This makes it seem rushed, but also fast paced.

Paragon takes place fifteen years after the events of Skyborn which would also place it after The Fall of the Sith comic collection. The Sith have fallen elsewhere, and this is truly an isolated lost tribe of the Sith.

Short Story Review: Lost Tribe of the Sith: Skyborn

Sat, 27 Aug 2011 09:00:00 MDT
BERJAYA The best part about Skyborn is the new character, Adari. You can tell by the way her thought process is written, who she is. The way in which she goes up against the traditional beliefs of her people is also well played. It makes it seem like an alien version of our own dark ages. The Sith also seem more appropriately sinister. This is a slight change from what it was like in the first short story, so there was an unexpected and unnecessary shift in character.

Skyborn takes place during and immediately after Precipice from the point of view of Adari.

Short Story Review: Lost Tribe of the Sith: Precipice

Sat, 27 Aug 2011 09:00:00 MDT
BERJAYA Precipice is well written. It starts with a bang, creates tension, escalates, and leaves the reader interested and wanting more. The characters are easy to invest in and genuinely likable. This strength is also a problem, however. This is supposed to be about a lost tribe of Sith, not angels. These are supposed to be the bad guys. Therefore, they have to be easy to invest in, but not necessarily likable. Because of the brevity required for the story, it also feels rushed, moving instantly from one problem to the next. But overall, it was enjoyable and left me wanting more.

The story takes place on or around the end of The Golden Age of the Sith comic collection. This is confirmed with references to Naga Sadow sending them off on a mission to prepare for the coming battle with the republic.

Comic Book Review: The Golden Age of the Sith

Thurs, 25 Aug 2011 09:00:00 MDT
BERJAYA PUBLISHED BY: Dark Horse Comics

BRIEF SYNOPSIS: 5,000 years before Luke Skywalker, the Sith make their first bold move against the Jedi and the Republic.

PROS: Ancient Star Wars-ian feel, appears familiar yet alien, good story despite some superficial elements, cliffhanger.

CONS: Somewhat superficial, artwork a little too much .

BOTTOM LINE: Although not perfect, The Golden Age of the Sith is a nice addition and background to the Star Wars universe.
