Quake Wars Update Adds VOIP
- BERJAYA 12 Comments
The Quake Wars Community Site has been updated with news of patch 1.2, which adds, among other things, full VOIP support:

The ETQW 1.2 Update features full voice communications (VoIP) support, allowing rapid and easy coordination with your team-mates. You can select the input and output devices independently of your speakers which allows you to use dedicated headsets and microphones, communicate on three separate channels, mute all VoIP, specific channels, or just specific players (which incidentally also cuts all bandwidth usage), set the volume and test your devices in-game. There's full hardware refresh support for connecting and using USB headsets while the game is running too.

Church Forgives Sony For Resistance Snafu
- BERJAYA 22 Comments
Because Resistance: Fall of Man failed to win a BAFTA, the Church of England has forgiven Sony for using Manchester Cathedral in their launch-day first-person shooter:

After it was announced that the game had not won an award, the Dean of Manchester Cathedral, the Very Reverend Rogers Govender said: "I think some important lessons have been learnt.

"So we do forgive Sony for what they have done, even though they still believe they have done nothing wrong. In an industry that is breaking new frontiers, it is important that long held traditions of film and television are maintained.

"These traditions include having courtesy, respecting the dignity of your subject, and admitting when mistakes have been made. In so many ways Sony have failed to live up to these standards by disrespecting people of faith and the victims of gun crime here in Manchester."

He said however due to the row over the video game the cathedral had seen an increase in visits from young people and tourists.

It's too bad Hellgate isn't unlocking today. I might have braved the EA Downloader (which is almost as risky as playing Russian Roulette without a condom) to get in on that action. A week early is a week early!

What still-functioning on-line game distribution systems do you not like? What game(s) or services would they have to offer to provoke you into trying it?

P.S. - Andy should have a swanky video preview of The Witcher up later today!

Flagship Addresses Funky Adware EULA
- BERJAYA 24 Comments
Flagship Studios posted a lengthy explanation about its somewhat dubius Hellgate London EULA which basically states they have the right to scan your computer and report what software programs you have installed and other fun stuff like that. Long story short, they just want to prevent cheating:
We just made some big announcements about Hellgate: London, and its been great to see all of the excited comments regarding what we have in store for our players on day one and onward. On the flip side, weve also heard grumblings about the EULA that went out with our DX9 single-player demo.

We want to make something very clear. We are in no way scanning your computers for your personal information or taking any personal information without your knowledge. The only time that Flagship or Ping0 would collect your personally identifiable information is when you actually decide to give it to us. Examples are when you create an account for Hellgate: London online or when you provide us your personal information when you enter a contest. The language in the portion of the EULA that has been cited is actually fairly standardized language that is used in the vast majority of EULAs for recent on-line software. It was unfortunately also somewhat broad in scope and potentially ambiguous in nature in an attempt to keep the legalese at a minimum.

This catch-all statement was included so that we have the ability to determine if someone is using hacks, unauthorized mods or other abusive applications while playing the game which spoils the gameplay for everyone else. We also use this catch-all to protect other parties offering technical support, such as our online provider, Ping0. This is a completely legitimate function and other leaders in the MMO space do it in an effort to stop hackers and provide better technical support. In order to stop hacks and cheats, as well as attempts at outright fraud, we may need the ability to scan our players computers for applications running at the same time as our game. This paragraph was designed to be able to allow for such functionality. It is also important to point out that EA does not determine what we do in regards to online and offline for our game security.

Also, this has nothing specifically to do with advertisements. EA has nothing do with Massive or potential ad-serving in Hellgate: London. First and foremost, any in-game advertising that would be in Hellgate: London is there to simulate how London looks in the real-world. Ads that represent this have been in the entirety of the beta, and in fact, have been shown in the game for well over a year. The fact is that we did not agree to potentially have ads in the game just to make more money. If we did not work with Massive, we would have to get individual approvals from every single company that we want to feature in the Underground stations. This is simply too time consuming and its much better to have the experts to do it, allowing us time to focus on making Hellgate: London better and better while getting a realistic portrayal of London in the process.

Should we elect to serve ads, they must be approved by us, Flagship Studios. We would demand that they be in-context with the game world - aged, weathered, only shown in appropriate areas, just as the static posters you see in the Stations are now. We have no interest in putting giant, bright-white billboard in the middle of your battles or having you wield swords of Brand X Cola.

Finally, Hellgate: London and all of the online play and components are controlled by Flagship Studios and Ping0. Were all gamers here, and were as sensitive to protecting our personal information as you are. This is why we have spent the past six months becoming a member of the ESRB Privacy Online certification program. This means that were meeting the most rigorous standards in the industry for protecting your privacy and the information that you provide us.

Sorry Andy, no Sword of the Soft Drinks for you!

Thanks, Blue's News.

Fallout 3 Preview
- BERJAYA 0 Comments
The people of the mounds at Game Banshee stopped howling long enough to produce a multi-page preview of Fallout 3, based on time they spent with the much-anticipated game at the recent Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany.

Here are some of their impressions:

The fight moves on to a square near the Tenpenny Towers building. And just as you think it's over, an endboss tune is heard and two buses are seen exploding in the distance, as a huge supermutant identified as the Behemoth lumbers out. Armed with a car door and a fire hydrant, he wears a shopping cart on his back, to keep corpses in.

The BoS shooting him with their laser rifles doesn't seem to do much, but luckily the PC can pick up a "portable mini nuclear bomb catapult" from a nearby corpse. The Behemoth is killed with two well-placed (including one aimed) nukes, falling down dramatically in a mushroom cloud. Statwise, Pete Hines notes the Behemoth has a ridiculous amount of HPs and does a ridiculous amount of damage (with his fire hydrant), while the Fat Man nuclear catapult does more than 80 times as much damage as a Chinese assault rifle (the weapon of preference of supermutants).

The PC climbs up and meets Mr Burke atop the tower. He is handed the detonator, and after pushing the button a huge and beautifully crafted nuclear explosion is seen in the distance, the shockwave of which hits the PC a bit later.

Psychonauts Sequel Rumor Quashed Like a Bug
- BERJAYA 7 Comments
There was a rumor floating through the internet tubes for the past couple of days that a sequel to the critically adored - but buyer ignored - Psychonauts was in the works.

Not so fast, says Double Fine main man Tim Schafer:

Some have speculated a sequel to the game, while others have said this is Double Fines way of quietly hinting that a Wii port is on the cards.

In an e-mail to Next-Gen, Schafer rained on everybodys parade, explaining, Man, who knew how much excitement a little darkness could bring? The truth is we are just putting together a new page about 'The Excellent Game Psychonauts.' We're not announcing any new games or anything. Sorry if we confused anybody! We lightened up the image to hopefully make things clearer.

And there you go.

Hellgate London Unlocks Tomorrow?
- BERJAYA 32 Comments
Well geeze. It looks like if you buy Hellgate London from the EA store, the game unlocks tomorrow. Thanks, Brian Williams.

In other EA store news, if you pre-order Crysis, the game unlocks 3 days earlier than retail, plus you can download the SP demo on Thursday.

The kicker? EA's download service has a somewhat colorful history in terms of quality and support.

Do you feel lucky? Do ya?!

BERJAYA BERJAYA

Update: Flagship is unaware of any such offer, although the EA store has yet to change its deal.

Long story short, the official [closed/secure] multiplayer servers probably won't be up and running until 10/30, but if this deal stays intact, you might still be able to play single player and unranked co-op games.

We'll see what happens at Midnight Noon...

Update #2: Okay, it looks like they won't be unlocking it tomorrow, as they added this little bit:

Release Date: 10/31/07

PS3.IGN has posted some impressions of BlackSite: Area 51, Midway's upcoming alien-infested shooter. Snuck in near the end of the article is word that online co-operative play won't be included:

It's also unfortunate that we must report that the online co-op that was promised for the game early on won't make it into the final release. Whether or not it could be added in a downloaded pack remains to be seen, though we're not holding our breath.

Quake Wars: OpenGL Ain't Dead Yet
- BERJAYA 28 Comments
[H] popped out a nice Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Performance and IQ guide taking a look at how the game performs on today's hardware.
Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is an OpenGL based game using a modified Doom 3 gaming engine. While the rest of the gaming development community swings to the tune of Microsofts DirectX API, id Software is sticking to OpenGL. OpenGL can technically do everything DX10 can do, and more, through the use of extensions, and id Software has developed the Doom 3 engine to be very flexible. Splash Damage and id Software have taken this engine and modified it for use in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.

ETQW, unlike Doom 3, has many brightly lit outdoor scenes as well as indoor. This takes an artistic turn from the dark dingy hallways of Doom 3 and Quake 4. With this new opportunity in map design using the engine, id Software has created a new technology called MegaTexture. This allows the creation of one very large map which encompasses the entire battlefield, allowing unique objects and detail eliminating the effect of repeated tiles. Through texture compression the memory footprint required by video cards is a small 8 MB of storage space. We have certainly proven in this evaluation that this game runs very well on the latest video cards using this technology.

Sometimes "when it's done" isn't the best mantra for releasing games. Case in point: Quake Wars.

Clive Barker's Jericho Now Available
- BERJAYA 21 Comments
At last, the final Jericho trailers are available, meaning I won't have to post about the game again!

Just in time for the scariest holiday of the year, Codemasters today announced its long-awaited action/horror game Clive Barker's Jericho has shipped to retail outlets nationwide. A terrifying squad-based shooter based on an original concept by the master mythmaker, Clive Barker's Jericho is available for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, the PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system from Sony and Games for Windows, and is rated "M" (Mature - Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Sexual Themes, Strong Language - Content that may be suitable for persons ages 17 and older) by the ESRB.

Cited as, "A poop your pants scary video game," in the October 2007 issue of Stuff Magazine, Clive Barker's Jericho is a spectacular, creative, blast from Barker's cannon of nightmares, and an interactive experience that mingles the darkest elements of his horror fiction with an ambitious, age-spanning story aimed at mature gamers, fans of Clive Barker and horror fiction enthusiasts.

Clive Barker's Jericho dispatches gamers to the Middle-Eastern city of Al-Khali, where the most ancient of evils has resurfaced; causing intense paranormal activity that has caught the eye of the military. Controlling the Jericho squad, an expert strike team skilled in both conventional and paranormal warfare, players fight their way through slices of time on a grueling journey as they make their way toward the heart of the evil. Along the way, gamers encounter the horrific armies of hellish denizens that now rule the city and corrupt everything they touch, and as they incrementally approach the source of evil, players will have to rely less and less on traditional weapons and instead focus on the combined psychic talents of the Jericho Squad.

Additionally gamers can still download the Clive Barker's Jericho playable demo for the Xbox 360 from Xbox LIVE Marketplace and the PLAYSTATION 3 system version from the PLAYSTATION Network, with the Games for Windows demo available from the official game website.

Not that I hate the Clive's Jericho or anything, but you know, 20,000 trailers in 8 weeks is rather OTT.

It's preloading now on Steam, and will be released on Friday if you prefer to buy online.
