Today's question:
When you play multiplayer games, do you usually use the same handle / nickname?
ActionTrip: Are you guys planning to develop any new IPs?Gabe Newell: You know, if you get two Valve people together, they're inventing new games. We're just sort of looking to find out how much we can design. God, I would love to work on a turn-based strategy game, personally. Maybe we'll get around to it, but not a lot of people would agree. But our ambitions have stripped our ability to ship by a couple of orders of packaging. But I'm sure there will be some doing new worlds, doing new game types. Hopefully, the flexibility we get by going for smaller projects will let us be more experimental rather than spending half a decade to come up with a whole project.
The Need for Speed franchise has always been on the cutting edge of car culture, said Executive Producer, Larry LaPierre. Street racing is getting more organized and Need for Speed ProStreet is our interpretation of where we anticipate the culture to be in three to five years. Were delivering on the ultimate proving ground, bringing you out of your neighborhood back alleys and on to the world stage. This is a next-gen game, packed with the raw intensity and visceral aggression that defines street racing at the highest level.
Tripwire Interactive today released its next update pack for Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45, the award-winning WWII online action game. The update includes a new map, a new vehicle and some major graphical enhancements to the game and is available to owners of the game for free through Steam. To give gamers a chance to try the updated version, Tripwire is offering a five-day freeplay period, August 29-September 3, as well as a 20% discount for new purchasers. The new map - Krivoi Rog - gives players the largest tank slugfest to date, with 16 square kilometers of terrain, 3000 meter viewable range and up to 50 players. This map also features the new vehicle - the German Panzer IV G, providing the German players with some additional fire-power for the mid-war period.
In addition to the new map and vehicle, Tripwire has created an all-new adaptive bloom system for the game's graphics, making the bloom crystal-clear even at low resolutions. For further eye-candy, Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering settings are now configurable in-game.
There are plenty more changes, updates and bug fixes in the update. Read the full changelog on the game page for details.
Tripwire also announces a six day freeplay period, this Wednesday through Monday. Anyone who does not have Red Orchestra can play the full game completely free for six full days. Simply download the game from Steam and start playing-the freeplay period starts at 1pm on Wednesday, August 29 and runs through 1 pm PST on Monday, September 3. Those who purchase Red Orchestra via Steam before September 5 will receive 20% off the regular price.
The wait is almost over. Halo 3, the final chapter in the groundbreaking Halo trilogy and the most anticipated game release of 2007, has been released to manufacturing.Three years in the making by renowned developer Bungie Studios, Halo 3 is now finished and will begin its journey to store shelves around the world in less than four weeks. Halo 3, which has already set new records as the fastest preordered game in history, has exceeded one million presales in North America alone. The title is set to shatter day-one entertainment sales records when it is released worldwide beginning Tuesday, Sept. 26.
This is a huge milestone for us and a big cause for celebration at Bungie and Microsoft Game Studios, said Harold Ryan, Studio Head at Bungie Studios. This is the game weve always wanted to make and certainly the best game our studio has developed. We cant wait for gamers to get their hands on it on Sept. 26.
Created by legendary developer Bungie Studios and exclusive to the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system, Halo 3 will set a new standard for interactive storytelling and social gaming by engaging consumers worldwide in Master Chiefs epic battle to save humankind. In November 2004, the worlds view of video games changed forever with the release of Halo 2, which generated a record-setting $125 million (U.S.) in sales within the first 24 hours and changed the way people think about interactive entertainment. Three years later, it remains the most-played game on Microsofts Xbox LIVE online gaming and entertainment network, with nearly 1 billion hours of online gaming logged to date.
Eurogamer: On that sort of note, Midway recently said that Stranglehold cost USD 30 million to make. How much investment's gone into The Orange Box?Gabe also gabs about DX10 and Vista:Gabe Newell: I don't know. We don't track that. One of the nice things about being an independent developer is we just keep everybody busy. We're making lots of money, and we just focus on what we're trying to build and then build it.
Eurogamer: Speaking of technologies with a lot of utility for gamers, or not, what's your view of DirectX 10 been so far?I'll play the Devil's Advocate here, and suggest that by the time Valve releases Episode 3, that percentage will be up closer to 98%.Gabe Newell: The thing that we struggle with - so, we use Steam to look at what our customers are actually buying and what they have installed, and right now there's far more DX10 hardware on XP than there is on Vista. About 2 percent of our customers have Windows Vista and DX10 hardware, so for us the investment strategy is to access DX10 hardware functionality - like the tessellater - using the DX9 API, and we can get what we need, we can get access to that hardware functionality, maybe in a non-optimal way, by going through DX9. Until we start to see a much higher percentage of our customers flipping over to Vista, that's the strategy we're going to use.
