CVG speaks to David Braben[ Comment ] 15:23 PST | jrhunt | Print NewsCVG have posted an interview with Gaming Legend David Braben, co-creator of Elite. This interview largely concerns his current activity, but as ever, there's a nod to his past as one of computer gaming's true pioneers.
Well, David Winter contacts us again to inform us that he's added a second video to youtube showing himself and Ralph Baer playing the Brown Box. What's so special about that? Well, in this case it's the original version, with colour, as it was originally in 1968. Colour was later removed from it, so this is a rare opportunity to see this curio in action.
You can see the Brown Box video on youtube, and don't forget that you can also discuss it on the forums!

Namco Museum DS Trailer[ Comment ] 17:05 PST | jrhunt | Print NewsAny Nintendo DS owners reading this (come on, there must be some of you) will be pleased to see this trailer for Namco Museum DS. This forthcoming release may well do for Namco's back catalogue what Tetris DS did for Tetris - drag it kicking and screaming into the age of wireless multiplayer and dual-screen action with brilliant results.
The games fetures are Pac-Man, Xevious, Galaga, Galaxian, Mappy, Pac-Man vs., Dig Dug II and Tower of Druaga. Be warned - the page is in French and the video's in Japanese, but you don't have to be tri-lingual to understand it, just hit play and soak up those visuals!

Unseen version of Pong unearthed![ Comment ] 16:43 PST | jrhunt | Print NewsPong with a round ball? Preposterous! However, David Winter himself contacts us with the following press release regarding this interesting bit of gaming history:
Video game historian David Winter and video game inventor Ralph Baer made a video which shows the nicest feature a pong game should have had: a round ball. This unreleased project was planned for the 4-player Odyssey in 1973, but never made it into production. David Winter salvaged the documentation shortly before it would have been trashed, and rebuilt the round ball generator within a couple hours. The video is on YouTube
Truth now officially stranger than fiction.

Neo Geo titles coming to Nintendo VC[ Comment ] 18:08 PST | jrhunt | Print NewsIt's good news for any Neo Geo fans this September, as Nintendo have announced the first wave of Neo Geo titles for the Wii Virtual Console. The catch? They're only awailable in Japan. For now. Chance are they'll follow in other regions soon, though!
The three confirmed releases so far are Magician Lord, the Neo Geo's pack-in, World Heroes, and Fatal Fury. Fatal Fury is released on the 11th September with the others to follow later. Each game costs 900 Wii Points.
Rather than taking one and smashing the rest to ensure that they're even more rare and thus more valuable, Retro World are selling off their stock at 170 a piece! It may seem a little steep, but it's a bargain price for the ultimate in retro-geek accessorising!

Atari down for the count?[ Comment ] 16:58 PST | jrhunt | Print NewsIs Atari hanging on by a thread? Join Marty "Retro Rogue" Goldberg in this new article as, ahead of Atari Inc.'s meeting with the NASDAQ board on August 30th, he ponders the current fortunes of the company and asks whether the Atari curse is about to strike again.

"Joust is an arcade game that's as old as Pac-Man and has global awareness," said Cerenzie. "We took one element of the game and the brand itself and built a whole new world around it for the film."
Cerenzie calls the new script by Marc Gottlieb "Gladiator meets Mad Max." The film is set 25 years in the future and includes a Las Vegas suspended in mid-air.
"We've updated the game into a commercial, tent pole movie," said Cerenzie. "Marc has done an amazing job in creating a tantalizing and filmic world based on the original game."
And, just in case you've forgotten the original game, play a flash remake of Joust and try your hardest to imagine a film version of it. Of course, if Joust does well it's only a matter of time until the Pac-Man and Space Invaders movies!

Track & Field Remakes Abound![ Comment ] 2:31 PST | jrhunt | Print NewsIn 1983, arcade goers everywhere were giving themselves minor injuries attempting to best each other in the 100 Meter Dash playing Konami's classic Olympic themed game Track & Field. It later found its way to various home consoles such as the Atari 2600, MSX and NES. As the game's primary control method involved pressing two buttons as fast as was physically possible, the game tested the sturdiness of not only the hardware it was being played on, but also the the player's wrist.
If you have any desire to test your button-mashing or joystick-waggling abilities once more, Konami have employed remake veterans Digital Eclipse to put a remake of Track & Field out onto Xbox LIVE Arcade. Features include sharper graphics and sounds, and online leaderboards. Most importantly, this game includes the option of changing the control input between the face buttons, d-pad and analogue stick, which in effect lets you choose which part of your gamepad you wish to destroy first. The game has already been released, so check out xbox.com for further details.
Konami have also recently announced at the Leipzig Games Convention that they will releasing a new Track & Field game called New International Track & Field on the Nintendo DS later this year, in honor of the game's 25th anniversary. This new version seems to be more of a re-imagining than a direct remake, sporting a more cartoony looking graphical style, and altered control method. This new method involves the rhythmic tapping of the stylus on the touch screen, which while it sounds like a more hardware friendly way of playing, it may be missing the rush of the original button-mashing method. Hopefully this game will not cause a wave of punctured screens and lawsuits.
The NES has been out a couple of decades now, and demand's been fairly low for the last 10 years compared to the initial launch, so it's certainly the right time to invest in one, this slump can't last forever!

Latest PinMAME release![ Comment ] 17:50 PST | jrhunt | Print NewsPinball machine emulation is one of the more gloriously obscure parts of the scene, but it also shows emulation at its noblest, preserving the history of gaming by any means necessary! In celebration of this nobility, take a look at the latest PinMAME which was just released this week.
Among its notable features are netplay (for LAN and Internet gaming), and the rather original "Realtime reverse" where the sounds and gameplay emulation reverses itself so that you can retry things. Sounds like a great addition to me!
You can find the official Meisei source and executable download on Hap's site.
