Director's Message: Teacher Appreciation Week
I would like to take this opportunity, when all of America joins together in appreciation of our Nation’s teachers, to recognize the great work of our own educators. DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS-Guam proudly joins the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and school districts all over the country in recognizing our teachers during National Teacher Appreciation Week. This year’s commemorative week is scheduled for May 7–13, 2006.
Teacher Appreciation Week was established around 1944. In 1953 Eleanor Roosevelt persuaded Congress to proclaim a National Teacher Day. Since 1984, the National PTA has designated the first week in May as a time for communities nationwide to honor teachers for being a guiding force in helping children develop into healthy, happy, and successful adults. . .(go to article) |
Director's Message: Administrative Professionals Week
Administrative Professionals Week, originally called National Secretaries Week, is always observed the last full week in April. Celebrated worldwide, Administrative Professionals Day will be on April 26, 2006, and the week's observance will run from April 23-29.
Administrative Professionals Week began in 1952 as an effort to acknowledge support staff professionals for their day-to-day work efforts. In DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS-Guam I wish to recognize these key individuals for their dedication and commitment to excellence. According to the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP), the theme for the 2006 observance, "Creating Excellence," speaks volumes about what I observe and hear in my office, the district offices, and throughout our 45 schools. . .(go to article) |
Director's Message: SMS Update March
As indicated last month, my intent is to provide our teachers and administrators with regular updates on the status of the SMS (Student Management Solutions) implementation in DoDDS-Pacific.
In February, school nurses received additional hands-on training on the SMS Health Module as part of their Pacific School Nurses Conference. Paul Heino, Japan District SMS Support Specialist, provided updates and listened to concerns identified by participants.
High schools can now print transcripts for most students. If the transcript contains errors, it can be saved and edited as a Word document providing the student with a correct official document. The time it takes to print transcripts is still a challenge and significant improvement appears to depend on upgrades to the software that are out of DoDEA’s control. . .(go to article) |
Director's Message: Building Teamwork and Partnerships
As we begin the 2nd semester I want to recognize all the teachers and administrators in DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS Guam for their commitment to ensuring the best educational experience for the children and families we serve. As I visit schools and meet with military commanders, I remain very proud of the work that takes place in our schools every day. The recognition our schools receive would not happen without the strong sense of “teamwork” that occurs throughout the Pacific.
The Education Division staff at my office continues to assist you by providing professional growth opportunities and reviewing educational programs to ensure we maintain our focus on highest student achievement. It is through this dedication and commitment that we impact the lives of the students we serve. . .(go to article) |
Director's Message: SMS Update February
In recent communications with DODDS-Pacific/DDESS-Guam employees, I promised to provide our teachers and staff with regular updates concerning the status of SMS and the improvements we are making during this initial start up period. I hope these updates will serve to highlight changes and benefit everyone as we move forward with the implementation of SMS. I also hope this information will act as a catalyst promoting communication between our office, the district offices, and throughout our 45 schools.
You need to know that, on the whole, things have improved substantially since the beginning of the school year. In fact, it is hard to keep track of all the changes! In this update, I will focus on only two areas - the health module and Gradebook – but we will address other areas in future updates. . . (go to article)

Director's Message: American Education Week
November 13–19, 2005, is American Education Week (AEW). This year's theme, "A Strong America Starts with Great Public Schools," highlights the importance of bringing together teachers, administrators, parents, students, service members and our communities throughout the Pacific in a unified effort to highlight the success of our students and schools. In addition, the theme reflects America’s vision to provide students with quality educational programs so that they become leaders and achieve success in the 21st century.
Throughout its history the Department of Defense Dependents Schools has made excellence in education their top priority. DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS-Guam is recognized and respected as a world-class educational system. Much of our exposure and many of our achievements can be directly attributed to one individual. . .
