The Balfa Brothers (il loro nome originale in francese è Les frères Balfa, talvolta il cognome viene citato come Bolfa) fu per vari decenni uno dei principali gruppi di musica cajun della Louisiana.

Storia

Il gruppo era costituito da cinque fratelli: Dewey (1927-1992), fiddle, Will (1917-1979), fiddle, Rodney (1934-1979), chitarra, Burkeman (1936-2004), tit-fer e Harry (1931-1995), accordion, Burkeman e Harry, erano presenti nel gruppo sporadicamente. Attivi dalla metà degli anni quaranta, originariamente suonavano a livello regionale in occasioni di feste o raduni, svolgendo principalmente altri lavori per mantenersi. La svolta professionale è datata 1964, quando il gruppo partecipò al Newport Folk Festival, ottenendo un inaspettato successo e facendo conoscere a livello nazionale la musica cajun (in declino in quel periodo anche in Louisiana). Intuendo un discreto potenziale anche a livello commerciale del genere musicale, il gruppo si organizzò (assieme ad altri musicisti tra cui il veterano fisarmonicista Nathan Abshire) per incidere già a partire dalla metà degli anni sessanta. La morte di Will e Rodney, avvenuta nel febbraio del 1979 a causa di un incidente automobilistico, fu il motivo dello scioglimento dei The Balfa Brothers, con il solo Dewey a continuare a suonare, per molti anni punto di riferimento di musicisti cajun di nuova generazione.
