Ronnie O'Sullivan came through a tough match against Stephen Lee to take his place in the last four of the World Championship.

The defending champion was rarely at his sublime best in a tense quarter-final and squandered his share of frame-winning chances.

But he came back strongly after the final mid-session interval to advance with breaks of 83, 103 and 113.

Lee played his part in a fascinating match, pegging back O'Sullivan and compiling high breaks of his own.

But he was also guilty of errors and may regret a few missed pots at key moments.

O'Sullivan may have to improve his consistency if he is to beat seven-times champion Stephen Hendry in the semi-finals.

Frustration got the better of him during Wednesday's morning session, when he tossed his cue in the air after fluffing an easy blue.

The Rocket attempted to catch it, but missed again, allowing it to tear the table cloth. Attendants had to repair the table hurriedly before the start of the afternoon's action.

Afterwards Stephen Lee said that he did not think O'Sullivan was good enough to win the Championship.

"He's a good player. But match snooker with him and John Higgins? I'd fancy John every day," said the Trowbridge player.

"Matthew Stevens has also not has a bad session since he came."

O'Sullivan vented his anger towards his semi-final opponent Stephen Hendry and snooker manager Ian Doyle.

"The most satisfying thing for me to send Stephen Hendry back home to Scotland, so he can have a nice summer off," he said.

"And stop one of Ian Doyle's players from winning the tournament."
