Ebdon advances to semi-finals
Peter Ebdon hit break-building form against Hamilton
(7) Peter Ebdon (Eng) 13-6 Anthony Hamilton (Eng)
Peter Ebdon brushed aside Anthony Hamilton to reach the semi-finals of snooker's World Championship.
Already leading 11-5 after the first two sessions, the 1996 runner-up grabbed the 13th frame with breaks of 30 and 58. Hamilton gave himself a brief glimmer of hope by taking the next with a 69, before Ebdon wrapped things up. The first four frames of the match were shared. Both players looked impressive, with Hamilton making a 109 in the third, followed by an Ebdon 108.
It was the same story again in the second session as Ebdon stretched his lead to 11-5. This included the longest frame of the match, and arguably the scrappiest - lasting 55 minutes with a total of seven fouls. Ebdon took little time in winning the frames required, and said afterwards that his fitness regime and diet were paying dividends. "I've been working very hard physically by swimming all season," he said. "I'm in the best condition of my life, but that's only through hard work. "I've been careful with my diet. The difference between losing is a razor's edge and sometimes you're doing what ypou can to find that edge. "I've been addicted to Licorice Allsorts all my life, I thought it was time to knock that on the head. I've cut out all the carbohydrates and other rubbish too." Nottingham's Hamilton was pleased with his time at The Crucible. "It's been great. I've made 40 grand and beat the world number one," he said. "I would have settled for that before the tournament started and now I've got 14 weeks off." |
