Hann shocks Hunter
Paul Hunter pots a ball during his defeat to Quinten Hann at the Embassy World Championship
Hunter's late rally was not enough to avoid defeat

Australian Quinten Hann upset ninth seed Paul Hunter 10-9 to reach the second round of the Embassy World Championship.

Hann, who had not won in two previous visits to the Crucible, came from behind to score a shock win.

Two-time B&H Masters champion Hunter held a 6-3 lead from Monday's opening session but Hann struck in the first frame on Tuesday, scoring 102 without reply.

The Australian, who has had a somewhat chequered career, also won the next two frames to level the match.

The Englishman took the next frame but Hann responded by winning the next three to lie just one away from victory.

Quinten Hann on his unconventional break-off
Hunter fought back with breaks of 101 and 92 to force the match into a deciding frame - but it was Hann who came out on top in the crucial 19th frame.

Hunter said, after what was arguably the match of the tournament, that he thought he had played well and the fact that he had won two tournaments during the season had eased the blow

"I'm disappointed obviously," said Hunter.

"I played my best snooker when I was losing. I was unlucky in the last frame to get a kick on the black.

"It was a good match and it's only a game of snooker. I've had a good season and won a load of cash."

Hann smacked his break-off shot in the sixth frame at the pack of reds, with BBC commentator Dennis Taylor saying that "it was bordering on ungentlemanly conduct."

"I didn't think it was that bad to do that," said Hann.

As regards his comeback in the second session, the Australian said that a number of factors were responsible for the turnaround in fortunes.

"I started to hit the ball really well in the second session. I played reasonably well and had a run of luck," he said.

"To go 9-7 up I played well, I had a 44 advantage and then Paul came back and I thought that was it, but then he got a kick on the last red and that was that really."
