The Globe and Mail is reporting (as is The Star) on today's provincial funding announcement for the TTC's Transit City plan, providing two-thirds of the required $6 billion funding needed to complete the project. Premier McGuinty pledged $17.5-billion for rapid transit projects across greater Toronto and Hamilton "in a massive pre-election move that provides a massive boost to the TTC's ambitious light-rail network plans and calls for the extension of the Yonge subway line," the Globe writes. Highlights include: - The province will partly fund 52 rapid-transit projects in the next 12 years
- The province will fund two-thirds of the costs, up from its usual one-third share of recent years
- 902 kilometres of new or improved rapid-transit routes built by 2020
- 175,000 jobs created during the construction, to begin in 2008
Projects include: - The TTC's $6-billion Transit City plan, which calls for seven new light-rail routes crisscrossing Toronto.
- Extending the TTC's Yonge subway line up to Highway 7
- Electrifying the GO Lakeshore lines, which will make a trip from Hamilton 15 minutes faster and reduce emissions

To get Transit City underway and to ensure that the TTC's very-popular existing streetcar routes continue to operate into the future, the TTC is starting the process of acquiring new light rail vehicles for Toronto. To do that, we have launched a new, interactive website — mynewstreetcar.ca — and will be hosting a series of open houses. On-line or in person, everyone will have the opportunity to see for themselves the latest designs from around the world and to provide their own personal advice on Toronto's next generation of streetcars. Everyone is also invited to the New Streetcar Open Houses which will be held:
Monday, June 25 at Finch Subway Station Tuesday, June 26 at Scarborough Centre RT Station Wednesday, June 27 at the Albion Centre Thursday, June 28 at Yonge-Dundas Square
The Open Houses all run from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. |
