ZDF CLINCH DOUBLE GOLD

The then patron of the Zimbabwe Agricultural Society, who was the President, Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Cde Robert Mugabe presented the Zimbabwe Agricultural Society Floating Trophy for the best designed Show stand and the Chairman’s Floating Trophy for the best stand exhibit by a member of the Zimbabwe Security Services including Government departments to Commander Zimbabwe Defence Forces, General Constantine Guveya Chiwenga at the just ended 101^st edition of the Harare Agricultural Show, which ran over period 19-27 August 2011.Presenting the awards, the President commended the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) for putting up a splendid display and winning the above mentioned top two awards.

Euphemistically the Former President said, “Makorokoto! Gore rino makunda mapurisa mumakwikwi chaizvo. Asi makaenda kwa Tsikamutanda?” Translated to English he said, ‘Congratulations! This year you managed to consistently beat the Police in these competitions. Did you consult a traditional spirit, Tsikamutanda?’ In response to this remark, the Commander Defence Forces just smiled back contented with the achievements of his men in this year’s exhibitions.

The ZDF theme for the 2011 HAS was ‘The Zimbabwe Defence Forces; resolute in defence of national gains, peace and security as we celebrate agricultural growth and promote green business.’ Designers of both static and mobile displays went all out to ensure that they depicted ZDF roles and activities promoting agricultural growth and green business in line with the theme.

Show goers thronged the ZDF Stand, which remained a crowd puller throughout the nine day Show. There were long queues of both adults and children who wanted photographs taken for them riding a military police escort bike, while others waited for their turn to enter a helicopter and an armoured personnel courier (APC) outside the ZDF exhibition hall. A D30 howitzer on display also attracted big crowds. Mainly children lined up for an opportunity to fire rifle blanks at the exhibition mini-range.

Beaming with joy over his double gold award, the ZDF Stand Director, who is also the Director Defence Public Relations, Colonel Overson Mugwisi attributed the achievement to good preparation for the event.

He said, ‘We prepared for this Show hence we have won.

Most comments recorded in the ZDF Stand visitors’ book by the show goers indicated that the ZDF exhibition was fantastic. The exhibition comprised electronic television based media displays, beautiful giant pictures stuck on walls and eye-catching military hardware displays carefully laid out outside the exhibition hall. What also appeared to have added glamour to the ZDF Stand were attractive interior and exterior decorations, good landscaping and beautiful flowers strategically placed both inside and outside the ZDF exhibition hall.
