Over the past few weeks the mTrop site has been going through a
few changes - namely it has just been moved to a new server provided
by Mario Bontempi (more to come).
Please note that the '~' has been removed from all paths on the
site - so if you're looking for '/~survivors' it's now '/survivors'.
All this has been spurred on by a sudden interest within the mTrop
community to keep the tool alive - if you're interested in what's
developing the 'mTropo-List'
is probably the best source of information.

Dirk Bester - another xFactorian writes...
Hi there, it's kool to see mTropolis keep on going just like the
Terminator. So what am I doing now? Well this former technical lead
for mTropolis now works for Adobe after a leasurely 1 1/2 month
break after the Quark shut down. Dammit, why didn't Adobe buy us
like they were supposed to. I would like to tell everyone about
the project I am working on, but it is still unannounced unfortunately.
Suffice to say it should make a software publisher located in Denver
very happy once it is released though ;-)
In other news, the VP I work under says he still gets one or two
requests a month from mTropolis users requesting that Adobe buy
mTropolis. As for the source code collecting dust at Quark: well,
its not for a lack of trying on our part to get at it. Quark just
doesn't want to part with it. On an amusing note: Adobe recently
shipped inDesign, a print publishing product that is, well, a Quark
killer. Personally I am hoping for a slow malingering death for
them.

Just got a message from another xFactorian now located in Australia.
Hey there. I recently came across the mtropolis.com site, and your
"Where are they now?" call. As the ex-Product Manager for mTropolis,
it warms my heart to see that the "survivors" cared enough not only
to keep a community alive, but to snatch up the domain when it came
around!
As for me... after our quick-and-dirty shutdown way back when,
I went out to Denver for a week to make sure that 2.0 would actually
see the light of day, if only for the existing mUsers. Leaving things
safely in Margie's hands, I flew back to Burlingame, went straight
to Keith's for a cocktail, and started making plans to travel around
the world. Then I did just that. Well, almost. Nearly 20 months,
and an infinity of experiences, later, I'm in Australia--and just
getting back into the industry again.
One thing the mTropolis geek in me would really like to know is
whether anyone is using the Net Messenger in v2.0. I'd thought that
this feature had amazing potential, and was really looking forward
to seeing what you all could do with easy peer-to-peer messaging...
maybe because we spent so much time specifying and refining this
beastie, or maybe because one of the last things I banged out in
those final days was the mChat client / server example buried (unnoticed?)
in your Goodies folders.
So how about it?
Cheers,
Jeff Dill

Ralf Naumann from CUVA Virtual Studios just sent in a QuickHelp
tool for mTropolis - hopefully it will help make somebody's job
a little easier. Thanks Ralf.
If you have any question or comments regarding QuickHelp please

Mugsy Lunsford has just posted all of the original mTrop tutorials
- hope this helps to get somebody started with mTrop.

Just got an email from Keith R. Crosley, an xFactorian with the
title of "Director of Technical Communication" at mFactory.
Basically he translates that to "I wrote most of the stuff
in the manuals all the way up thru version 2.0 - on contract for
Quark)".
Keith writes "Just ran across your pages at www.mtropolis.com.
Cool. I'm still surprised there are so many people that continue
using mTropolis...you asked for suggestions -- how about a "where
are they now?" page about the people who built mTropolis???"
Take it away Keith...Where are U Now?
"Where am *I* now? I work for a home networking startup called
Avio Digital (www.aviodigital.com)
and am also involved with a cool streaming MP3 site called Wired
Planet (www.wiredplanet.com)."
Any other 'xFactorians' out there, drop me
a line and let us know where you are now.

Anybody using the Net Messaging Service?

Just to let you know - while the source code for mTropolis is collecting
dust on the shelves at Quark - the user community is still refusing
to die.
That said, it should also be noted that we also haven't really
been too involved in trying to do anything about the future of this
product.
Recently, Spud's 'Survivors'
pages found a new home again at this site and are still probably
the most up-to-date resource for anything mTropolis related.
Nick Mera's 'Undocumented'
site is now live.
Check out Mugsy's 'Tutorials' if you're
just getting started.
