Abstract
Treatment resistant depression is commonly defined as a depressive disorder that does not remit after two therapeutic trials of antidepressant treatment. However, different factors can contribute to treatment resistance, and not all cases that qualify as “treatment resistant” require advanced therapies. Similar to many other kinds of health conditions, some strategies for overcoming treatment resistance in depression can be effectively implemented from within primary care, whereas others are more likely to involve referring to a specialist or sub-specialist. Regardless of whether they are prescribing or administering advanced treatments in their own clinics, primary care providers should understand what these treatments entail and what their own roles should be in collaborating with other providers to ensure that their patients get the best health outcomes possible.
