Matt Lowrie joined Google as a test engineer in 2006, which he describes as a very exciting time. The company gave them the freedom to try things, and he said it felt like anything was possible in engineering. He spent nearly 19 years there, but he quit after saving enough to retire early and because he felt the company was pressuring him to adopt AI too quickly. He said he struggled to trust the technology for the work he was responsible for. "I felt that if this was the direction Google was going in, then maybe I'd aged out of it," he said. Since then, he's started to appreciate how AI can be a helpful productivity tool in his daily life.
