I won't pretend I knew exactly what I was doing. In fact, I definitely didn’t. I knew the problem I wanted to solve, I knew the industry, and I knew I had the drive. But nothing truly prepares you for the reality of building a business from the ground up. Twelve months later, here's what that journey looks like: A growing team now in double digits Working with some of the world's biggest retail brands Processing thousands of automated carrier claims across the world Delivering automation that saves our clients serious time and money More lessons than I could ever fit into a single post The honest truth about year one? It's humbling. You'll be a strategist in the morning, a salesman before lunch, Account Manager in the PM and questioning every decision by midnight. But those moments are where the real growth happens, not just for the business, but for you as a leader. I've grown more as a person in the last 12 months than in the decade before it. The biggest lessons? Your team IS your business. Hire people you trust, give them ownership, and get out of their way. (I can’t emphasise the importance of this) The clients who challenge you the most are often the ones that make you best. And momentum is everything. Keep moving, keep learning, keep building. To our clients, thank you for trusting us with your operations. We don't take that lightly. To the legends internally, thank you for building this with me. James B. posted thisSomeone asked me recently if I’m scared of AI. I said, “Are you scared of a microwave?” It sounds flippant, but hear me out. When microwaves first appeared, people were sceptical. They didn’t trust the idea of invisible waves heating food. There were safety concerns, misinformation, and a general sense of unease around something unfamiliar. Sounds familiar? Now, nobody thinks twice. We learned how to use them safely and effectively, and they became part of everyday life. AI is following a similar path. It’s not about blind adoption or hype, but practical integration. For those of us in tech, it’s already streamlining repetitive tasks: writing boilerplate code, generating tests, analysing logs, improving documentation. It’s not replacing critical thinking, but it’s amplifying productivity in ways that are hard to ignore. Like any tool, the value comes from how we use it. And just like with the microwave, the early scepticism tends to fade once the benefits become obvious.

James B. posted thisA few weeks ago, my lawnmower stopped working. I suspected the carburettor, so I took it apart and found it full of a waxy substance, thanks to the newer E10 fuels. Easy fix, I thought. I cleaned it, put everything back together, and started it up. Nope. The engine was "hunting" all over the place, and whenever I engaged the drive, it cut out completely. After checking the governor spring, gaskets, and connections I touched, I figured the carburettor internals were too old and ordered a new one (£15 vs £20 for a rebuild kit). While waiting for it to arrive, I decided to do a full service - a new air filter, spark plug, oil, and lower ethanol fuel to prevent future build-up. Once everything was fitted, I was sure it would work. It didn’t. Now it wouldn’t start at all. Fuel was getting through, but there was no spark. After 10 minutes of checking connections, it fired up again - still running badly, but slightly better. I spent ages tweaking the carb, checking gaskets, and draining the system again, but no luck. Finally, I called a local engineer. He ran it for a bit, pulled the spark plug, and immediately saw the issue - it was sooted up. The engine wasn’t getting enough air. After some investigation, he found the choke was stuck closed because the butterfly valve on the new carb was slightly larger than the original. A quick sanding of the intake manifold gave it the clearance it needed, and suddenly, the mower ran perfectly. Lessons Learned: 1. Don’t change too many things at once - If you introduce lots of variables at the same time, you’ll never know whether you’ve fixed the issue or just created a new one. 2. Give changes time to settle - Not every fix works instantly. Sometimes you need to let things run for a bit to see the full effect. 3. Small details can cause big problems - A millimetre difference doesn’t sound like much, but it was enough to stop the choke from working properly. Always check the little things. 4. The obvious fix isn’t always the right one - Just because something looks like the problem doesn’t mean it’s the only issue. Keep digging. 5. Sometimes you need a second opinion - A fresh pair of eyes can spot things you’ve completely missed or assumed were OK. Looking back, it was a solid reminder that whether you’re fixing a lawnmower, debugging code, or making any kind of improvements, the same basic rules apply: take things one step at a time, be methodical, and don’t overlook the tiny details.

James B. reposted thisJames B. reposted thisPERSONAL POST: Help Support My Para-Standing Tennis Journey! 🎾 For over 20 years, tennis has been a significant part of my life, providing me with opportunities for growth, achievement, and a sense of belonging. I always played against non-disabled people, as growing up I, nor my parents never really knew about Paralympic sports and pathways. Last year I was introduced to a new format, para-standing tennis. I heard about international tournaments; and in my own words said "why not, lets give it a go and see what happens". Since then and earlier this year, I achieved two big milestones by winning the European and World Doubles titles with my partner Ross Cudmore. I also came runner-up in singles. 🌟 Following this success, I'm excited to say that I have been invited by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) to compete at the US Open event in September as part of a Para-Standing tournament! A fantastic opportunity to share the stage with tennis icons. 🙌 This has fueled my determination to continue and to support my journey, I've launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds which will go towards training, equipment, and travel costs. With that said, I have a question: Approximately what proportion of jobs do you currently have on your radar require a full UK Driving License? The why it is required is not a subject that I require for this personal project, but if you do want to drop the why, feel free to comment it below as well. Just what proportion require it. I am aware that the specific set of recruiters that I have in my network tend to either be focused on technology roles or legal roles, so it isn't the widest sample size, but I still feel that the data will be valuable. James B. reacted on thisJames B. reacted on thisI’ve accidentally said “Spotify integration” instead of “Shopify integration” enough times at Type Global now that it’s basically become part of my personal brand. 😅 In my defence, both: • start with “S” • are embedded deeply into my brain from my time at Kobalt Music • and somehow involve data pipelines, APIs and an astonishing amount of data! Despite my occasional confusion, Shopify integrations at Type Global are actually one of the quickest things to set up! At this point I’ve said “Spotify” so many times that nobody even corrects me anymore. They just nod politely and wait for me to realise 😅

The carrier claims space is one of the most quietly fascinating corners of logistics right now. Billions of parcels move every year. A small percentage go missing, get damaged, or never actually reach a human and behind every one of those is usually a claim. A claim that, today, still takes 12–15 minutes of manual work to raise, gets bounced between systems, and often ends in a "computer says no." Automation is finally catching up. But here's what I find interesting... Almost everyone in this space is standing on the retailer's side of the fence. Tools to help merchants file faster, recover more, push harder against the carrier. And fair enough retailers have been underserved for years. But claims aren't a one-sided problem. Carriers are drowning in parcel volume, low-quality submissions, missing proof, and disputes that could have been avoided with better data at the point of dispatch. If you only automate one side, you just make the fight faster, not fairer. That's the bit we're doing differently at Type Global. Yes, we save retailers ~95% of the time it takes to raise a claim & Yes, we massively improve success rates. But for some retailers we have actually reduced the amount of claims that they are submitting because we have got rid of the claims that they were wasting time on that were invalid saving everyone time. But we're also sitting down with carriers, actually talking to them, showing them what we're building, asking what they need to process claims faster and with more confidence. Cleaner evidence in, faster decisions out. Everyone wins, including the end customer who just wants their parcel. Automation in this space shouldn't be a weapon. It should be a bridge. Lead gen used to take us hours every week, researching companies, finding the right contact, writing outreach that didn't sound like a template. So we automated it. More of an AI sales assistant than a spam tool and we still review everything before it goes out. The same approach works across loads of different problems. Lead gen just happened to be ours. Designed and implemented a platform for bringing new concession brands into MATCHES. This includes business and API documentation which is available for brands, UI’s for internal teams to onboard new brands and support queries from brands, and looking at business processes.
All inbound and outbound data uses event driven approaches for scalability and resilience, all infrastructure is managed using terraform, using a mixture of NextJS running on EKS, Lambda, SQS, EventBridge, API…Designed and implemented a platform for bringing new concession brands into MATCHES. I worked on this project as a front end developer using react, web pack, node, redux and ES6, we built an application that allows users from small and medium enterprises, including sole traders, to apply for business loans, with a quick way to get a quote, see if they are eligible for the loan before a credit check is carried out. Our aim was to get the process to be as intuitive as possible, using the least amount of screens possible without cluttering the screens.

This application was designed for desktop and tablet use using twitter's bootstrap layout. This application was built using MVC5 and a set of backbone views as the front end with a C# back end.
