Today, my thoughts on this topic were shared in the Financial Times. I discussed why making a success of the opportunities presented in the eco-digital era is a defining challenge for our time. Digital innovation can drive productivity, accelerate scientific discoveries and enable more efficient use of resources and sustainable business models. But to make the most of these opportunities, we must make the right strategic decisions – we must make choices which are good for both businesses and the environment. It’s on all of us to make sure we learn to ask the right questions, as our future depends more than ever upon the quality of human critical thinking and decision-making. We went from the adrenaline rush of zip-lining through the Mountains to forging genuine, invaluable connections with global colleagues. The highlight for me was the final evening: awards, dinner, and dancing under the stars. Darren Coupland liked thisDarren Coupland liked thisAfter 30 years, today is my final day at VirginMedia O2, and I’m also calling time on a 40-year career in IT. It’s been quite a journey. I’ve seen the organisation evolve through BT Mobile, BT Cellnet, O2, Telefónica UK and now Virgin Media O2. Over that time, I’ve also had a front row seat to the changing telecoms industry from paging (yes, those little black boxes of joy that used to go off in the middle of the night!), through 2G, 2.5G, 3G (Smart Phones!!) and 4G, to where we are today with 5G. I’ve been lucky to work on some genuinely interesting things along the way: building the first data warehouse, migrating millions of customers across five different billing systems, delivering decommissioning programmes and multiple re-platforms, and helping to build out business intelligence capabilities. I’ve rounded things off as a Data Delivery Manager, playing a small part in the journey to democratise data across the organisation. What’s made it for me is the people. I’ve worked with truly brilliant colleagues and partners over the years; people who really care about what they do, who take pride in building quality systems and keeping complex services running, always with the customer and customer experience front and centre. I can honestly say I’ve loved working in IT and at VMO2. Thanks to everyone who’s been part of my journey at VMO2, it’s been a pleasure.
