The most common COSHH mistake is jumping straight to PPE. Gloves and masks have their place, but the regulations are clear: personal protective equipment should be the last resort, not the first response. Before reaching for PPE, you should be asking whether you can eliminate the hazardous substance entirely, substitute it with something safer, or use engineering controls like ventilation to reduce exposure. The other common gap is the risk assessment itself. Many businesses either don't have one or haven't updated it in years. If you've introduced new products, changed suppliers, or altered your processes, your COSHH assessment needs to reflect that. Chemical-related health problems often develop slowly.
