India’s push to become an AI superpower faces a critical gap: the absence of deep, basic research. Amit Sheth, one of the world’s most cited computer scientists, warns that while India races to build applications, it is skipping the foundation—Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 1–3, where real breakthroughs begin. The government’s new ₹1 lakh crore R&D scheme funds only TRL 4 and above, while industry and venture capital largely focus on late-stage tinkering. This, Sheth cautions, “narrows the innovation pipeline” and prevents disruptive ideas from emerging. The challenge doesn’t end there. India faces a research talent crisis. Unlike Silicon Valley, which thrived on Stanford, Berkeley, and thousands of PhDs, India still struggles to scale world-class research. Most IITs and IISc remain teaching-focused, producing far fewer globally cited researchers. India Launches DHRUV64, First Indigenous 64-Bit Dual-Core Processor The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), under the Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has launched an indigenously built 1.0 GHz, 64-bit dual-core microprocessor called DHRUV64. India consumes an estimated 20% of global microprocessor output, most of which is imported or designed outside the country, as per statistics released by the MeitY. The launch reflects a broader policy push to build local capability in advanced chip design and adds a new entry to India’s portfolio of indigenous processors.
