The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund and the Hudson’s Bay Foundation announced that applications are now being accepted for the Oshki Wupoowane | The Blanket Fund. Through two grant streams, The Blanket Fund will provide support for Indigenous cultural, artistic, and educational activities. Grassroots Indigenous communities and organizations, and Indigenous individuals undertaking related initiatives, are eligible for the fund. The Reconciliation Action grant stream (ranging from $1,500–$15,000) will support community-level reconciliation activities, events, and initiatives that contribute to cultural revitalization; elevate Indigenous culture, languages, and traditions; increase understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples; or other grassroots initiatives that move reconciliation forward. The Capacity Building grant stream (up to $175,000/year) will support grassroots Indigenous charities, programs, communities, and initiatives with the potential for significant impact. This grant stream commits to multi-year relationships, in an effort to increase the capacity, networks, programs, and profile of the partners selected.

At Cause We Care Foundation we’re closely following the conversation around the pause of B.C.’s $10-a-day child care program, recently covered by the The Vancouver Sun. We know first-hand that reliable, affordable child care is essential to creating long-term economic stability for families. Many of the women supported through our Single Mothers Support Fund rely on child care assistance to complete education or job training programs, and subsequently participate full time in the workforce. Our Community Grants program also represents a key investment pillar that directs funds to frontline organizations that offer critical supports to single mothers, including safe and reliable child care. As organizations like Kiwassa Neighbourhood House shared in the article, continuity matters. Sustained investment that builds capacity and elevates single mothers to their full potential remains at our core. Without reliable, affordable child care progress becomes fragile. As a community, we must ensure that single mothers are not forced to choose between caring for their children and securing their future.

Great conversations and thoughtful questions. Thanks for having me, REACH Edmonton Council for Safe Communities! One of the core ideas I shared is that Canadians still care deeply about giving back, but their intentions don't always turn into action. Here's a hard truth: 82% of Canadians say giving is important. 70% feel a personal responsibility to make the world better. Yet fewer people are donating each year, and those who do are giving less. Sound contradictory? Welcome to the intention gap. Three things donors consistently tell us: "I'd give more if I were approached the right way." "I'd give more if I could find the perfect cause for me." "I don't feel like I'm learning anything by being involved." The good news? This is fixable. It starts with shifting how we think about donors, as people with their own missions and desire for impact. A few takeaways from the conversation: • Donors want to be approached in the right way • Donors want to learn through the giving experience • Donors want confidence that their gifts will make a difference • Better tools can help turn generosity into action What other shifts are you seeing in donor behaviour right now?

Hey fundraisers – do you ever talk to funders outside of deadline periods? If not, you should! The Peterborough Funders Forum this morning was an opportunity for government agencies and foundations to share information about their programs so charities would know the types of projects they prefer to fund, and how to make sure your application is successful. Buuuut… So few charities take the time to speak with these organizations outside of deadline periods. As one of the speakers said, it’s their job to give away money – and if they understand what you do and the impact of your programs, they can help you hone your applications so they’re more successful. They can also tell you which other funders can support you! All the funders know each other, so if there’s not an immediate fit with the organization you’re speaking with, they can point you in the right direction! I STRONGLY recommend that you book meetings with your local funders to talk about EVERYTHING you do – and ask them for guidance. They want to benefit the community too, so a constructive partnership helps everyone! Statistics Canada indicates that approximately 63% of seniors are either non-users or basic users of the Internet and digital technologies, highlighting a significant digital divide. In 2022 alone: $59M was lost to romance scams—many targeting seniors. $9.4M was stolen through “grandparent scams.” Phishing and tech support scams, often powered by AI, cost Canadians another $58M—with older adults disproportionately targeted. Digital literacy isn’t a luxury. It’s protection. It’s dignity. It’s independence. At Digital Seniors NL, we’re building a movement to empower seniors in Newfoundland and Labrador with the skills they need to safely and confidently navigate a rapidly changing digital world. An Ontario Nonprofit Network report on the progress of the transformation of Ontario's employment system. It doesn't take long to read and gets to the point, if you would like to understand what the new system means for front line providers and jobseekers.

Recently, I stopped writing grants that talk about how Dolly Parton's Imagination Library affects standardized test scores. That's not the point, and that's not the motivation. What I've started talking about is how putting books into the hands of children affects generational literacy. This shift in the mission explanation for this program has resulted in more approved grants and stronger community engagement. The truth is that literacy rates continue to lag, especially among vulnerable populations. There are a plethora of reasons why that's the case, but standing beside the pile of challenges is a little voice saying, "What if there was something we could do about it?" I truthfully cannot think of a more cost-effective, simplistic, or impactful option to address generational literacy than this program. Kids Can Fly is honoured to be one of the largest chapters of this program in all of Canada. We send out 1,500 books to children in Brantford and Brant County every single month. In our data collection efforts, 95% of families express that not only has this program influenced the space for book-reading in their families, but that it also builds connection and excitement about literacy in their children. Announcing Becket – Newfoundland and Labrador’s Integrated Youth Services network. 🧠🏡👩‍⚕️ After nearly a decade of engagement with over 1,000 youth and 300+ community service providers, Choices for Youth is thrilled to share the new brand for "NL Integrated Youth Services". The Becket network will focus on offering a combination of clinical services and wrap-around supports, that address both the causes and the symptoms of youth mental health challenges. Following national best practice models, and co-designed with young people and community partners, Becket is built on a simple but powerful goal: improving youth well-being across Newfoundland and Labrador. Through a hub-and-spoke model, Becket connects young people to: 🧠 Mental health services (in-person & virtual therapy) 🏥 Primary care (in partnership with NL Health Services) 🏠 Housing services 💼 Employment supports 🥗 Basic needs 🪶 Culturally appropriate supports The name and brand, chosen through consultation with nearly 200 youth & service providers and co-developed with our Youth Advisory Council, comes from the Beothuk word “Becket”, meaning “Where You Go.” This honours the first people of our province and centers their legacy in the work we do. Becket sites will be operated by local non-profit services, with backbone support services provided by Choices for Youth. So what’s next? 📍 First hub now open: 12–16 Carter’s Hill Place, St. John’s 📍 Second hub coming in 2026: Operated by Vine Place Community Centre, Corner Brook And we’re just getting started! Our goal is nine connected hubs across Newfoundland and Labrador, a network built by youth, for youth. Great analysis of the budget from Imagine Canada: “While Budget 2025 rightly focuses on innovation, productivity and reducing red tape, it does not extend these priorities to the nonprofit sector. Investing in nonprofit innovation would allow organizations to test and scale prevention models that keep people from reaching points of crisis. Investing in nonprofit data, including continued and expanded support for Statistics Canada’s work to collect and analyze data on the sector, would enable smarter resource allocation, policy and funding decisions. Reducing administrative burdens in the federal grants and contributions system would allow organizations to deliver greater impact with the same public dollars. These are opportunities for smarter, more efficient investment that the government has not yet seized.”
