Developing for Direct Boot on Android Nougat

For some apps that schedule alarms and receive messages, delivering timely notifications is critical. With Android Nougat, we’re introducing the option for apps to run before the user unlocks the device after a reboot, so your users will never miss that important alarm clock in the morning.

Is it possible to test directboot with the emulator? I've updated my alarm app to support it, as it's really useful. But without a Nexus device, it seems kind of hard to test if it's limited to real devices.
Anyway, that's still a great feature to have!

Battery Historian scores you on battery-friendliness - reduce battery consumption for billions of users:

Reduce battery consumption for billions

Battery life is precious on low-cost phones and over intermittent power supplies. Today’s tip offers best practices to reduce battery consumption on Android and the Web for billions of users:

First, understand your app or site’s battery consumption using Battery Historian and Batterystats (walkthrough - https://goo.gl/M0Vqbl). Then, further conserve battery by reducing user actions required to access your content, such as detailed logins, long menus, or multiple sub-pages, to keep things lean.

On the Web and with native apps, you can usually reduce battery consumption by checking for and eliminating unused or duplicative network requests, content reflows, and limiting ‘expensive’ animations or sensor use. Periodic audits of those functionalities helps build a battery-efficient experience.

On Android, you can then use GcmNetworkManager to schedule all non-essential background activity for when the device is charging and is connected to an unmetered network.
This is the fifth of five weekly posts we’re sharing on how to build Android and Web products for billions of users. Check out our full lists of Web (https://goo.gl/SV83fI) and Android (d.android.com/billions) resources on building content for billions.

In today’s world of game-as-a-service on mobile, the lifetime value of a player is a lot more complex, as instead of a single purchase, revenue is now the sum of many micro transactions. Read 5 tips to learn how you can design and improve monetization as a mobile game developer with best practice examples from mobile game developer, Kongregate, to help you improve game-as-a-service monetization.

INCREASING MOTORCYCLE SAFETY - A custom hardware integration for motorcycles. #AndroidExperiments
BERJAYA
After I had a serious motorcycle accident due to equipment failure, I set off to build a system that would notify me via audio and visual cues of potential dangers. My project is made up of an Android app and a piece of hardware the passively monitors data from my tire pressure sensors and ECUs and sends the over bluetooth to my Android Application. Since the CANBUS messages are undocumented I needed to reverse engineer them. I’ve also bui...

Scoped Directory Access in Android Nougat

Scoped Directory Access is new to Nougat and provides an alternative to the storage permissions with two important differences:
- It gives you access to only a specific directory - don’t request access to the entire primary storage if you only need the pictures directory!
- It gives read and write access to SD cards and USB attached storage!

I see, not only how you request the permission, the flow is also different. I guess it is fine because it is not that hard.

Android Nougat and Data Saver

Even if WiFi is ubiquitous around you, for many of your users, data usage on metered connections might have a very real monetary cost. Android Nougat adds a system wide Data Saver which restricts background data usage and gives a hint to foreground apps that they should limit data usage as much as possible.

If it isn’t time sensitive, JobScheduler offers a way to wait until the user is back on an unmetered connection. Otherwise, make sure you’re checking whether you’re on a metered connection and the current Data Saver state before network operations.
