I need to stop relying on YouTube reviews of films. I used to go to Rotten Tomatoes and if the critics loved it and the audience hated it, I would avoid it. Essentially anything a critic loves or hates especially with genre films ends up being the oposite of how I end up feeling after viewing a film.
I think it’s best to just go in blind with movies.
After watching multiple YouTube reviews praising that Obsession is the best horror film of 2026 so far, I figured I’d give it a shot. I don’t consider YouTube critics real critics so…🤔 I need to start considering them real critics.🙄
Best black comedy about mental illness of the year maybe, but horror ? No.
Black Comedy by definition is is a sub-genre of storytelling that finds humor in morbid, taboo, or serious subjects like death, war, disease, and suffering. Its primary goal is to provoke both laughter and discomfort simultaneously by treating bleak realities in an absurd or satirical way.
This film was directed by Curry Barker and features his partner in disturbing comedy Cooper Tomlinson in a supporting role. Barker and Tomlinson have posted many regular & black comedic shorts at their youtube channel That’s a bad idea.
Here’s the plot. A shy guy (who is most likely mentally ill ie. severe social anxiety disorder with the enourmous amount of meds in his bathroom vanity) decides it’s better to wish for a woman he obsesses over then actually let a romance blossom over time.
The spell goes horribly wrong and she turns into what can be equated to someone with severe bipolar 1 disorder, who has never taken any meds to control it.
The only way to break the spell is with the death of the person who made the wish.
There is quite a bit of exaggerated expressive humour, that you can’t help but laugh at, there is also quite a bit of disturbing elements. A few jump scares and one horrifying and utterly disgusting murder of one of the characters.
The acting is decent of the 4 main characters played by Inde Navarette, Michael Johnston, Cooper Tomlinson & Megan Lawless. Andy Richter appears in a throw away cameo as Lawless’ characters Father.
But I think the film suffers from a lackluster script that would’ve worked better if A. It was a grounded in reality film about mental illness or B. emphasized a more supernatural aspect to the wish at hand.
I give it a 2.5 stars out of 5.
