AI can’t own what it creates. At least, not yet. 🤖 Bot or Not: Reflections on AI, Ethics & Copyright I recently attended an insightful session, “Bot or Not – AI Ethics and Copyright,” featuring international voices and views from Georgetown University, Toronto Metropolitan University, Abu Dhabi University, Western University, and Institut Polytechnique de Paris. It was one of those conversations that makes you pause and reflect on how fast our relationship with technology is evolving — and how our ethical and legal frameworks are racing to keep up. Here are a few key insights that stayed with me 👇 1️⃣ Copyright law is about balance. It was designed to protect creators’ rights while serving the public interest — to encourage creativity, innovation, and the sharing of knowledge. Under Canadian copyright law, the author must be human. AI can assist in the creative process, but the human remains the accountable author. 2️⃣ AI is an assistant, not an author. The panel’s consensus wasn’t to ban AI, but to use it responsibly. Like every technological and scientific advancement, choosing not to use AI would mean limiting human potential. The focus should be on documenting how it’s used and ensuring humans remain fully accountable for its outputs. 3️⃣ Measuring contribution matters. Some researchers are exploring how to assess and document AI’s contribution — from the nature of prompts to the scale of creative or analytical input — helping define the line between assistance and authorship. 4️⃣ AI governance is evolving — globally and in Canada. Canada is contributing to this international conversation through several key initiatives: • The Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (AIDA) – a proposed framework to ensure the responsible design and deployment of AI systems. • The Advisory Council on Artificial Intelligence – providing advice to government on safe and ethical AI use. • The Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) – an international coalition working toward human-centric and trustworthy AI. 5️⃣ The big takeaway. AI is neither the author nor the adversary — it’s a tool. The real challenge lies in how we govern, attribute, and safeguard the data and content AI produces. 💭 As AI continues to learn from — and generate — vast amounts of data, how can we safeguard what it produces while still encouraging innovation and creativity? #AI #Ethics #Copyright #DigitalTransformation #PublicService #Innovation #AIgovernance #ResponsibleAI

🚨 17 Days Without Control: When Cloud Infrastructure Turns Against You For the past 17 days, we’ve been dealing with a critical issue on AWS in the UAE region — one that has gone far beyond a technical inconvenience. Every attempt to stop instances or adjust configurations is met with the same blocking message: “Request limit exceeded… throttled due to an operational issue in availability zone mec1-az1” This message has effectively become the center of the problem — a barrier between us and our own infrastructure. 📉 What does this mean in reality? No ability to stop or scale down servers No control over operational schedules No flexibility in managing resources Servers that were designed to run only during working hours are now running 24/7, with zero control. 💸 The financial impact is immediate and severe: Operational costs have significantly increased Resources are being consumed unnecessarily Budgets are under unexpected pressure ⚠️ And here’s the most challenging part: After contacting AWS support, the recommendation was clear: 👉 Migrate your infrastructure to another region But this raises a critical concern: Who is responsible for the cost of this migration? Because the reality is: We are already paying for servers running 24/7 instead of business hours We are expected to cover the cost of migrating infrastructure We must absorb the effort of reconfiguration, testing, and risk In short, businesses are being forced to carry both the cost of the issue and the cost of the workaround. 💡 Key lessons learned: Multi-region architecture is no longer optional Relying on a single availability zone is a risk True cloud resilience requires control — even during outages Cost risk must be part of infrastructure design decisions 🤝 To the tech community: Have you faced a situation where you lost control over your cloud infrastructure?
