macos client/CLI that doesn't mess with my main network interface?
macos client/CLI that doesn't mess with my main network interface?
Help

Hi all. I'm looking for a VPN client (ideally CLI) for mac that lets me run an openvpn or wireguard vpn config on a fresh network interface, without affecting normal internet traffic on my device. I just want it to provide an extra network interface (like utun6 or something) that i can use other software to bind to (I don't want any IP based routing for whether the traffic goes through the vpn, just the interface that i can bind specific applications to). Does anyone know how to do this or have a setup for this?

News

Naomi Brockwell released a video recently called "Is the Government Running a Dragnet on VPN Users?"

In short Naomi Brockwell explains that US senator Ron Wyden warns about Executive Order 12333 and FISA's section 702 which allow US mass surveillance of foreigners. But also that the US government assumed that a commercial VPN-user is a foreigner by default because it hides from which country the user is. So an American citizen, which nornally is protected by the fourth Amendment rights, is seen as a foreigner and spied upon by US intelligence services.

Thomas Massie also warned on April 23rd 2026 that he is aware mass surveillance loop holes being created via SCIF disclosures (Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility), but isn't allowed to go into details. Which might tie into this, but it isn't clear.

Followed by an opinion on VPN's, surveillance and a promise to talk about decentralized VPN and mixnets in the future.

Any workaround to make VPN work on iPhone browser only, without affecting other apps?
Any workaround to make VPN work on iPhone browser only, without affecting other apps?
Help

I live in Australia, with increasingly paranoid age verification requirements. I use a VPN on my personal Desktop to run all my browser traffic through (browser extension), but because I often use that Desktop for work as well (I work from home and the laptop from my employer is ancient and slow) I can't typically run the VPN app during the working day. My employer has put geographic restrictions on our Microsoft account that kick me out of Teams and Outlook as soon as it detects that I'm "international". I can use a VPN and connect via Australia, but that won't help with the local age verification restrictions. I tried setting up Private Tunnelling, but the Microsoft login process is so embedded in Windows that I ended up just switching to the browser extension. It works for now, at least until I can figure out the private tunnelling setup.

However, I also have Teams and Outlook set up on my personal iPhone (again, working from home it's much more convenient to have access on my phone). iOS seems to prevent private tunnelling, and a VPN works at the system level, meaning Outlook and Teams get disconnected again.

Is there any way to run a VPN so it will work only on my iPhone's browser, or to set up a private tunnel or similar effect that will still allow Outlook and Teams to connect?

Note: I work for a not-for-profit charity, so I can't really demand better equipment or a work phone, the equipment they provide "works" it's just frustrating enough that I prefer to use my own equipment.
