This album just kills with fire. For me it's like a live performance -- unconstrained by worries about what will fit on a record or what will sell. It's pure jazz, largely conceived and performed on the spot. Beast of Kommodo: it just rocks. Plenty of space. They let it groove to see what happens, what comes along, how does this sound? Play a riff, see how you feel, did that work? and play another riff to react. I wish this song could go on forever! Let it fade out with some percussion and bring it back in a calmer form with the flute and that killer bass line, which gloriously disassembles itself as the song ends.

And I love how they take chances with unconventional instruments. Bass sax? Yes please!

This new ECM reissue is excellent and the jacket is great.

A great pressing. The sound is detailed, natural and very precise. I'm very satisfied with this release.

Marvellous pressing. Sounds great. Dynamic. Quiet. Great music. Nice packaging too.

My copy, preordered from a US independent record store, was covered in bumps, some up to 1/4" diameter, as if there was a foreign substance embedded throughout the vinyl, or the stamper was riddled with pits. I returned it for a refund since they didn't have any more in stock.

I've bought dozens of these deluxe reissues, and cosmetic flaws are not uncommon, and even on rare occasions there are audible scuffs, but the first ECM reissue I decided to pay $40 for was the first one I've ever had that was unplayable, requiring me to seek a refund.

Wow! Great Jan Garbarek. No nordic esoteric here. Straight stuff with Terje Rypdal on guitar and a rhythm section to die for. Thanks ECM Luminessence Series!!

Garbarek's first may well be his best, and it's a joy in its new tip-on gatefold.
