Budget Deckbuilding: Tombstone

BERJAYA

It is Wednesday yet again, which means that I prepared another article for a Magic the Gathering Preconstructed Deck of Yesteryear. In fact, the candidate I have chosen to feature is the last deck for Urza’s Saga, a Blue-Black deck named “Tombstone”. Or so I thought, because while reviewing this deck I found a few things that I could not quite understand, the secrets of “Tombstone” so-to-say. While Blue-Black is an excellent color combination due to the many cards that support the Aggro-Control idea that comes with pairing the two, “Tombstone” did not yet find such a silver thread to follow; which shows in the cards they used to build this deck with. But enough preamble, here is the article:

Vampire Survivors Clones 3 – The Next Generation

BERJAYA
The “Vampire Survivors” dev team simply cannot keep up with my demand for more monster horde extermination; so I started to look elsewhere again.

With the October update for “Vampire Survivors” being taken care of in under two hours, I longed for more “Survivors” titles to sate my appetite for games of the genre; and luckily, there are still plenty of games available for me to try. I do not have the goal of having the complete picture of all the “Survivors” games on Steam, but I like giving promising titles a shot. Now, often enough those titles disappoint, but every now and then there is a pearl hidden amidst all the cashgrabs. So, here are another six games that fit the “Survivors” moniker that I played over the last few weeks:

Budget Deckbuilding: The Plague

BERJAYA

The “Urza” sets started quite promising with “The Sleeper”, a deck build around enchantments that come to live a kick the opponent white weenie-style, and lost some steam with “Special Delivery” and its Red-Green weirdness; however, with two more decks in Urza’s Saga alone, I am excited to see what else the deckbuilders came up with back in the day. This brings us to today’s topic in form of “The Plague”, a White-Black deck that spreads pestilence in the truest sense of the word. Funnily enough, Beats and Skies did an article about what decks seem to be the most powerful in the MtG community on Reddit and this ranked third in mentions, only being behind the “Rat’s Nest” deck from Betrayers of Kamigawa due to “Umezawa’s Jitte” being in it and the sillyness that is Artifact Affinity in form of “Bait & Bludgeon”. So, being hyped and ready, let us see what “The Plague” has to offer.

Design Sins: Briar, the Insatiable Hunger

BERJAYA

“Briar isn’t your typical Noxian. While she might have an everlasting thirst for blood, she also has an insatiable hunger for something else. Life experience.”

– KARNIFEXLOL, Editorial Writer at riot games

This saturday, I have a double feature on my blog. The regular post was the Soulstone Survivors Guide for “The Necromancer”, but I happened to write a little extra that does not really fit anywhere in the regular schedule; which is why I decided to simply publish it rightaway. But first, some background for what’s to come: On the 25th of June 2022, I published a game review for “League of Legends”, a MOBA game and cesspit for player toxicity. I have played the game for years, took a relatively long break from it, was then convinced by my Discord group that playing with only premades would make things better before finally de-installing the game for good a few months later, then writing my damning article about it and basically saying how it actively makes the world a worse place to be in.

Well, I thought I would be done with the game after naming the review my eulogy for LOL, but as it happens to be the game manages to incite my fury even when I am not playing it anymore. Unlike much of my other content, this article is going to be more of a rant about the design of a “League of Legends” character, in this case “Briar, the Insatiable Hunger”. I will be going over some of the “visual metaphors” that the design team at Riot Games applied to Briar and then give my feedback about why I think that she is an unclear and overloaded mess of a character concept-wise. Needless to say, all of the following lines, except for quotes I guess, are entirely subjective and you are very much welcome to disagree with me and perhaps even state the reasons why in the comments; but after taking a closer look at her background and creation yesterday, I felt the urge of writing about this topic.

Soulstone Survivors Guide: The Necromancer

BERJAYA

Here is the next “Soulstone Survivors” guide; and since I talked about “The Beastmaster” the last time I worked with the game, I figured that it probably makes sense to get the other summoner class out of the way aswell. Therefore, I present to you “The Necromancer”, a class that can technically do things on its own without the support of an army of undead minions, but ask yourself why you would do such a thing? “The Necromancer” is, as far as I am concerned, the pure summon class in “Soulstone Survivors” and gets massive power from the hordes of minions at their command. So, let’s see if I can get into further detail of how this class works best at high curse levels.

Budget Deckbuilding: Special Delivery

BERJAYA

The second deck for Urza’s Saga brings us the usual Aggro combination of Red and Green working together to beat the opponent into a pulp. But to stand out from each other, the Red-Green Aggro decks usual all have their own special touch, so what does “Special Delivery” give us? Well, apparently we have Echo and Cycling as major themes, which is certainly an interesting approach for an Aggro deck. But why judge before I have seen any of the cards in the package? So, lets see how Aggro was handled back during Urza’s days.

Budget Deckbuilding: The “Jokulmorder” challenge

BERJAYA

I am pretty sure that I mentioned my love for Coldsnap before. The idea of Snow cards was really cool, especially since it produces special mana that you can bar people from using if they do not have the “Snow-Covered” versions of the basic lands; and who uses them just for fun in unrelated decks? Also, Coldsnap had a lot of cool ideas being the misfit one set between the first Ravnica block and the giants of card design that are Time Spiral, Planar Chaos, and Future Sight. That was Magic the Gathering at its best if you ask me. But while a Snow deck as the thematic “Budget Deckbuilding” would be as appropriate as it would be expected, I wanted to feature one special creature first. I have no idea if there is something I can do with it, but being the casual player that I am there is little stopping me from chasing after silly ideas and writing articles about it. You see the picture of what I am going to work with up top anyway, so here it goes:
