Fail-Pug Anecdote Time!

To be more precise: "What would have been a Fail-Pug had it not been for Turny the Useful Bear".

Hmm where to begin? Alright, Turby had recently dinged 85. Congrats!

Via dungeoning alone apparently he was qualified for heroics and his first heroic was an In Progress Deadmines. He one-shotted Ripsnarl, Cookie, and Vanessa. Good job. Heroics are hard stuff!

He won one of the Best in Slot Hunter Stat Sticks and he needed to enchant it right away. Like "RIGHT NAO!"

This is where my druid comes back into the story. He is the enchanter of the crew. Turny has the 2H Weapon Mighty Agility enchant in his spellbook, which is exactly the enchant our Hunter was looking for. However, due to some rather questionable design features, this enchant is available for use at skill 470, but requires a Runed Elementium Rod that can only be used at skill 500. AND, to actually LEARN the formula for the rod you needed a skill of 515. What the f**k?

Oh, and the recipe can only be bought by going through the few intro-quests of Twighlight Highlands...and I just realied how many iterations of "gh" there are in the name of that zone. Anyways, this means that you must be at least level 84 and have a skill level that is 45 over the enchant-you-want to create it. At 515, this enchant doesn't even grant a skill-up. Wow, that was 15% as annoying and inconvenient as any FF14 feature. (Which means it wasn't THAT bad, or FF14 is JUST THAT BAD...)

(Apparently this is going to be fixed as of 4.0.6 but I do not care anymore, as both my enchanters are over the 470 mark)

Thanks to this error, I was forced beyond my will and control to level my druid to 84, which meant doing the tedious Bilgewater Harbour quests yet again, and also spend MILLIONS of gold buying enchanting materials to level my enchanting to 515 to learn the elementium rod recipe. That was how much Turby wanted this enchant, not my fault at all.

ANYWAYS, to get to 84 I decided to simultaneously quest and queue as a healer in the Pugger tool. Ten minutes later I was in a group for Vortex Pinnacle.

Our "tank" was horrible. Beyond comprehension. I knew that they were doing this on purpose to troll us. Queueing up as a tank in a DPS spec wearing PVP gear and ungemmed T7s. That was the little lie I told myself before having to Vote Kick him anyways. Reason: Not a tank.

Was I being irrational and impatient, was my ego in the way? No. Let me explain.

It is one thing for a properly specced properly geared person to Not Perform So Well. But this DK...umm....he would run up to a group of mobs, and would auto-attack and use one special attack on a single target. No howling blast, or death and decay or whatever those other spells are.

Chaos ensues. Everyone is aggroing everything, I the healer am taking damage, the clothies are all aggroing different mobs in an attempt to save me. We lived of course, I have uber heals and didn't even have to use the disgusting new tree-form. (I know I know I can glyph back to the old form but I am still bitter from the removal of perma-tree)

I COULD have been super patient, and explained to the DK that Blood is the new tanking tree, that he should be in Blood spec and perhaps use AOE or perhaps try to generate threat or perhaps suggest to him that he research on his own a bit about DK tanking before attempting the new dungeons? But how did he get all the way to 83 without realizing this?

There's a very fine line between being patient and helpful towards complete crazies you know? Though it was kind of sad as he genuinely seemed to have no clue what was going on; if he was "tanking" in a dps spec then his DPS was not that spectacular either (1,500....). So he was probably doing it to be annoying. Or had no clue what the heck was going on. Ebay. *Revelation* OMG EBAY! That's why! That's why he was full of unenchanted purples and pvp purples! Ok ignore what I just typed earlier. I can't believe I wasted so much brain power on why that DK was so full of fail.

tl;dr: So we had an Ebay tank and we kicked him and Turny tanked, and did okay-tanking even though bear tanking with all of its cooldowns need more time to maintain AOE aggro. Single threat is completely fine and I hit 84 and made Turby his stupid enchant. =)

Are Protection Paladins OP?

In PVE? Remember when I mentioned playing my paladin a couple weeks ago and thought retribution felt a bit clunky? That was actually their off-spec, my paladin's main spec was actually protection, and it was through tanking that she actually got up to the mid level 50s.

I decided to try out the "new" cata protection, worked hard to sort through all the holy righteous items in my spellbook and organized them according to how I think I would push my buttons in a general pull and started queuing as tank.

HOLY CRAP! From what I see, protection paladins do not die even more now! With this new Holy Power mechanic and Word of Glory self heals, my paladin could solo almost the entire lower blackrock spire save for the trolls that hex you into a frog then chop you into iddy biddy bits. Heck we could probably solo any dungeon at level? Which is kinda scary and sad.

Threat was almost never an issue, with hammer of the righteous being a nice guaranteed AOE along with our shield throw and holy wrath I levelled this paladin all the way to outlands and she is already 64! I was tanking the outlands instances half-afk while watching Mad Men with wow in the background.

From the 28934302 or so dungeons I tanked only two people had beat me in damage. The AOE damage generation is disgusting. (And I am proud to say one of them was a demo lock, and the other was a DK who was EIGHT levels above everyone else)

It was fun tanking, but in the back of my mind there spawned a slight sadness, this would all end soon, the Wrath Style run in and pull everything, once Truby hits 85 with a gear level of 329 it'll all be down to careful pulls, sticking to crusader strike and hammer bash.

tl;dr: Truny says "I think protection paladins are kinda fun because I can smash buttons randomly and be a useful tank while levelling really fast".

Heroic Halls of Reflection - Tanking

So APPARENTLY, queueing oneself as a TANK versus a HEALER gets groups EVEN FASTER.

If you want INSTANT groups, queue as a tank. If you want groups that take 2-5 seconds, queue as healer.

But why wait? So recently I've been queue Turny as a Tank. Though his gear is not stellar, his dodge is about 43% with 45K hp if a paladin or a priest is in the group.

(Remember, only GOOD gear comes from Heroic TOC or ICC, everything else is for "regular folk")

Even though tanking is a bit more involved than Healing, aka having to aim at mobs and keep them attracted to you, in reality...other than the Frozen Halls, none of the mobs really actually DO ANY DAMAGE anymore. Yes, even in crappy T8s. See how the standard has been skewed here?

Frozen Halls. Starting a battle with 0 rage SUCKS. Having a paladin who can shackle undead or a hunter who can freeze one of the Undead Gun-Dwarves is SUPER helpful since we can focus on all the melee without having to run all out of range and or waste rage on a low priority kill.

We used the "Hide behind Falwin" trick (or whatever the eff that boss is called), and WOW for once I can actually SEE what is going on.

What?

Well when I'm healing I practically have my face to the corner of the back wall while I throw out my HoTs and as long as no one is out of range we're good.

When I'm dps'ing I have my camera zoomed into first person perspective, while being ALL the way in the back corner being a good ranged-pew-pewer.

But as a tank you can SEE where the mobs are coming from, which ones are running straight to the healer and which one decides to stay in range.

A little bit hectic, I kind of missed my ranged Paladin taunts but once all the melee were focused on me and the ranged mobs were CC'd we were fine, no wipes.

For the Run Away sequence, it is a matter of gathering enough rage from the little ghouls to grab the attention of the big mobs before they splat the rest of the party. This time we had about 11K total DPS and made the getaway smoothly. The smoothest run being the party having about 15k dps.

So now that I think of it, hey I just tanked the "hardest" five-man without going SPLAT instantly! I mean, there wasn't a lot of movement involved other than sidestepping Corruption Wells but...hey! Ok...lost track of topic again!

Fine I'll Do It

Turny got his share of Triumph Emblems yesterday all right. Heck as a healer most queues for the new Dungeon Finder is about a minute. Yes a minute! Unlike the usual 10 for DPS.

So I spent some time jumping from Random Dungeon to Random Dungeon and soon it got kind of annoying...why can't we just have ONE group to chain them together?

So I did what we used to do in the good old days: Manually put a group together. I spammed some channels looking for a tank since that is all we needed and......nothing. No tanks??

Oh wait. I'm a tank!

But....ugh do I have to? Tanking is more brainless than Healing seriously.

1. Get mobs via Charge/Faerie Fire/Walk-up-to-them-and-go-o-hai-guys
2. Maul
3. Swipe
4. Lacerate/Mangle if it please my lord

Everyone is so overgeared for our poor ilvl200 Heroics anyways that movement, kiting, avoidance is not really required.

So I decided: Fine. I'll tank and ask for a heals/tank. And voila we find an awesome Shammy healer and BAM BAM BAM we downed a good handful of dungeons!

On an offnote Oculus was the first thing that we were queued into and I HATED EVERY SECOND OF IT even though we more or less facerolled through it. Bad memories of going into it extremely undergeared.

I felt uneasy as a tank. Compared to most tanks these days Turny's gear is only T8.5ish (Psh only?) putting him at 42% dodge and HP floating around 37-41k (if priested and or kinged), but apparently I don't get hit much. Though having been dps/heals even getting hit ONCE is like "AMG IMMA DIE"!

Most tanks I've been with have like 100K hp and 95% avoidance and 1% consideration for the rest of the party because they could so solo the entire dungeon anyways as we are just there to witness their glory.

And what's with these random DPS going afk for everything BUT the encounters? I tend to see this one random dot on my mini-map wandering aimlessly away from the mumbo-jumbo dots of where the action is going on, then as everything dies they move towards us. Weird.

But not to worry, there was a reason for all the Triumph farming and that is to finish off Turny's T9 Tanking set! I looked at the stats compared to the Conquest gear and Ulduar 10-ish gear and when I looked carefully the upgrades were really really marginal, along the lines of +2 agility, +3 stamina, and the same sockets so I felt really really cheap and didn't want to spend all those emblems for such minor minor upgrades but then again...where else am I to use them?

If anything I should look forward to the 4-piece bonus which is to reduce the cooldown on Barkskin by 12 seconds. TWELVE WHOLE SECONDS OMG I MIGHT ACTUALLY USE IT MORE!

(The 2 piece bonus reduces the cooldown on Growl by 2 seconds but .....why would I need Growl but to taunt bosses back to me at their decided intervals which is greater than the existing Growl cooldown?)

Whatever. Barkskin is the driving point.

Tanking Heroic Trial of the Champion

Yesterday was a quiet day. I logged onto my Death Knight to finish maxing out his Mining Skill to grab some titanium ores to prospect them into the fabled Epic Gems. I had put myself in LFG for the daily and the regular Trial of the Champion as well, since this DK is sadly under-geared and my inner Warlock is saying he is weak.

I managed to find enough ores for three epic gems and three titanium powders and having no groups I logged onto Turny.

As I log onto my druid I receive whispers left right and centre "Wanna heal this or wanna heal that". Uhh sure! Though the person who invited me disbanded the group randomly so whatever I threw myself into LFG once again and immediately got invited for the daily heroic.

People were discussing roles and someone said that they were healing and I said "But I'm a healer". This was because I thought I had put myself in LFG as a PLUS SIGN only but apparently I had changed my default to SHIELD and PLUS. I had not realized this until later but I said "Well I can tank (whatever)" and I'd have to say that that was probably a fairly fast Utgarde Keep with my chain pulling with no stops all the way until the last boss!

To all discipline priests out there I am not sure what is going on but I really appreciate your shields.

I always set the healer as my focus when I am tanking and our healer didn't seem to use any mana throughout the entire dungeon, which from my own experience as a Restless Tree is a very good thing, the tank is pretty solid.

What? I am solid?

So after this quick run we decided to try out H TOC. Dun dun dun!

Our circumstances were special.

I had never tanked this before on heroic mode. Our healer had never healed this on their specific toon, and one of our damagers was used to tanking instead of damaging. A very virgin run, sort of.

The bosses were declared and we get:

Lana Stouthammer: Aoe and poison bitch.
Marc Jacob Alerias (Spellcheck): GTFO Whirlwind Man
Colossos: LMAO What is he?

On the first pull I tried to focus on the rogue while maintaining my AOE Maul and Swipe aggro on the other two all while trying to avoid the poison pools and trying to avoid walking through the poison pools when the Warrior throws me and I think I failed to avoid his whirlwind as this damage was too much for our healer ...we wiped.

Everyone fly back and try again.

Same method. Make sure everything is aggroing me. Stack some Lacerates on the warrior and Colossos and focus fire on the rogue lady. This time I paid more attention to back away from Whirlwind and BAM they died one by one.

Everything after that was cake.

Eadric the Pure: Tank, turn around, tank, throw his hammer at him if you have a priest healer (which we did).

Black Knight: Easy peasy. Tank until he's dead. On second phase aoe aggro all the ghouls and move around if needed to avoid his Desecration and move away from any ghouls about the explode and dead. Last phase, just kill.

So in conclusion: Stay away from whirlwind! And this is probably a more healer intensive instance than anything.

Bear vs Death Tank

Death Knight, I mean.

I feel a lot more sturdy in Turny's teddy bear form and this could be blamed to the fact that I am visually larger than my Death Knight..perhaps. Klupty is just a skinny Blood Elf and he was a Blood Elf because he just happened to be the next toon on my list and I did not have a Blood Elf. Psh go figures.

Death Knight Tanking:

I like being frost. Klupty has always been frost and the dirty little reason was that I thought Hungering Cold was REALLY cool. Come on, you can freeze EVERYTHING around you? You purge the ground of all heat, that just sounded ..so cool! I have yet to find a really good use for this as I have not have mobs stray away from me, except for when I am questing and maybe TEN additional mobs on top of the five I am fighting aggro me and I need just a little bit of time to manage their death order. Howling Blast is also really nice, it attacks EVERTHING in range of it automatically so there are no aiming green circles and the damage is usually just a smidgen under my Frost Strike.

I try not to pull using Death and Decay. This ability just takes up way too many runes. If I pull a big group I usually pull with Howling Blast. Yes I know I can use Icy Touch, then the Plague Strike (or whatever the hell that other disease is), then Epidemic (or whatever the hell the "spread the disese" button is called), THEN Blood Boil, I could, but with crazy DPS who just can not wait, Howling Blast is pretty safe. With super high DPS I will use DND just to get that extra lock on Aggro but usually is unneeded. Were all those run-on sentences? Doesn't matter.

Afterwards it's just cycling my Rune Strike and Frost Strikes and triggering Howling Blast and Blood Boil on everything and you know what? The damage is not bad at all. At level 77 Klupty pulls a 1300 dps as a tank and is usually overall damage just because of the AOE-Happy nature of the way I spend my rotation.

For the record I have seen people who dared to sport ilvl226 gear and do less than 1200 dps. Come on, really? If you perfected a rotation, even with ilvl187 you can pull of much more. But DUH we all know that...anyways.

So tanking on a DK is pretty basic stuff, though I haven't been on in a while to get him more levels we shall see.

Teddy Bear Tanking:

Ahh Turny, he has almost double the health and double the armor of Klupty and I think the healing I receive from crits is very very nice! I think I prefer the teddy bear mechanics to the DK ones because I gain rage from attacking and also from being attacked!

Yes, we need to build up rage but once it builds up aggro is pretty much stuck on you. Maul with the glyph hits pretty hard and hits multiple targets. Mangle is a nice "pow pow" attack that has a nice oomph feeling to it and of course Swipe is probably my favourite spell to spam in the entire game, it's just so...spammable!

We have growls, faerie fires that do damage, a charge, an emergency heal yourself while increasing your health button and also Berserk which is pretty much ...awesomeness!

Though for me it boils down to how all these AOE attacks feel. See, with a DK if there is even a little bit of lag it just feels like button pushing. I like having all my attacks land at the same time I pressed the button for it, just something that bugs me. Also I sometimes find myself wanting Howling Blast to get off of its damn cooldown faster and really...my mind isn't devoted enough to calculate exactly how many runes each attack uses and exactly which runes are on cooldown. Heck I barely look at my runes, I find that when I'm on my Death Knight that I tend to be staring at my action bar waiting for something to be pressable.

With a Teddy Druid, I can at least WATCH the fight while spamming Swipe and expecting when to use Mangle and Maul!

And of course on the other side of the mirror is an INSANE Resto Druid!

Death Knight Tanking

It seems every single time I log into my Death Knight Klupty, I go and do some respeccing.

Klupty's respec fee is up to 20 Gold now. That is a LOT, considering all my other toons have maybe respecced ONCE.

I had tried out blood (apparently back in October 4th), and had cleared Old Kingdom (apparently, when I did not get the achievement yesterday), and didn't like it.

Sure my HP is always full but it felt...odd compared to frost.

So I respecced back to Frost DPS back then.

I then respecced to Frost Tanking, just so I can be of "some use" while levelling, at least having a chance to join an instance.

I read a comment yesterday which made me cringe: "I'll tank. I'm frost".

Oh. My. God.

I am frost too...but this guy as I checked his Armory...because I had a bad vibe from him, had all his talents in Frost. None devoted to Anticipation or Blade Barrier..err....

ANYWAYS.

So, respecced frost and did some tanking and felt quite squishy. We never wiped nor did I ever die but still felt squishy, but at least: Progress.

Klupty has zoomed from 72 to 76 now! AIY!

On a side note: With the same group, I tried out Turny's Bear tanking and I felt much safer behind all his HP, which by the way is at 31k, 27k armor and 37% dodge now. And also swipe and maul is OP. I love swiping! Swiper No Swiping!

Sorry!

MAYBE I will try to tank some heroics with Turny now. I mean gear-wise I am on average well over 200, the maximum back in the day and just....maul and swipe and lacerate and sh*t, right?

BAI!

Dual-Usefulness: Eliminate The Swords

For those of us Non-L33t players, we use LFG to look for others through a process called PUG'ing. Pick Up Group.

Just the name of it: Pick Up. What do we pick up in real life? Trash. We pick up trash and garbabe, we also pick up people who are down, the useless, we pick them up from the darkness, from their uselessness. Groups are just Picked Up randomly because we don't have godly guild members or friends to join up with. Ok i'll stop.

See, what if EVERYONE was your friend?

PUGs in my server, yes MY server not "OUR" server.... are usually fine. Only once in a while will you see someone just along for the ride and they usually get the point when they do not receive heals or whatever.

What was I talking about? *Looks at title*

Oh. Right.

So when we join this "Looking for (A Pick Up) Group" Channel. What do we usually see.

Sword. Sword. Sword. Sword. Sword. Sword. Sword and Plus. Sword. Sword. Sword. Sword. Sword. Sword. Sword. Sword. Sword. ShieldOMFGINVITETHEM. Sword. Sword. Sword. Sword. Plus (That's me, I ONLY HEAL). Sword. Sword. Sword. Sword. Sword. Sword. Sword. Sword.

So with my current trees: Restoration and Feral (Tanking) I have Dual Specced to anything BUT DPS. Thou shalt not wieldeth the Sword. I will be one of the rare Shield and Plus. I know ONE person who puts themselves into LFG like this, a Pally Tank that Turny grew up with, running BRD everyday until we were high enough to leave the Old Town.

I know some people are using their Swords to find either their Shield or Plus gear, but really...try it out!

Turny the Plus-Shield

Turny the Bear Tank Updates

Sorry for the stream of posts but I would forget to do this otherwise.

EMBLEMS OF CONQUEST!

Let us once again use our magical Bronze Dragonflight powers, and turn back time ohh say to July 2009.

Ooh la la, us non-part-of-a-raiding-guild-people, meaning ME had just taken a peek at the Emblem of Conquest vendor items and thought "Wow, how strong could this stuff be. It'd be nice to have a piece of this, if not just to be stronger, to have more power but have nothing to do with such power".

Once again, my Druid was sitting at level 20ish at this time. Wait really? Maybe 40s, I couldn't have gotten him to 80 so fast...hmm...anyways...

SO: Emblem of Conquests, I saved up 58 of these babies and bought a Chestguard of the Lost Vanquisher, or something like that.

Then, excited with this piece of purple word thing in his hot little paws, Turny goes and buys his T9 Feral Chest.

Whoa stop right there.

Not even his parents have TWO pieces of T8 Chests. Even though there is only one variety for Hunters and Warlocks....but.....but......I am so useful now!

I tried on this Chest, and it added a bit of Agility, and like 129 Stamina, since I was wearing some random blue chest, and some dodge which was nice.

However my emblem count went to 0 at that point and I missed them. So I returned the chest and TRIED to return the Armor Token as well and as I returned it all I got back was 5Gold.

Uhhh....oh....too bad looks like I'm keeping this after all.

So yes, Turny' s Feral set has its first "higher level" item, which is that Chest!

Actually I lie.

I had the highest possible non-raiding gear already. The H ToC leathers. ALL of them. And Marrowstrike. Well...

(I should really try it out in action. On paper it looks good but....I could fail terribly and not taunt/create aggro/tank properly)

At least it's one more "ewomfgwtfl2p blue gear" off my chest. Literally.

Ahh Blue Gears. I shall continue talking about it here as I am too lazy to start another post.

Sure you don't need Epics. As long as an item is properly itemized you are good to go. Of course if the boss hits harder than the numbers your blues generated then you might need to upgrade. You know? Ya know?

But why?

And honestly, nowadays, epics aren't so "epic". They rain and shower us with them yet we all want that 1-2% betterment. Who doesn't?

Prime Example: (Actually I have no idea what I'm talking about now)
In my healing form I was running with these Bracers. Was running the daily COS and they dropped and I realized they were better than the TOC (or wherever I got my old ones from) bracers.

Good job, that went well until I was scoping out the AH yesterday and for a measley 250G I saw under the Leather Section: This Bracer

Every single stat on it was higher than the old one. The overall average improvement in stats in the new bracers is 20%.

20% is a lot. But just for the bracers, for my character as a whole my spellpower went up by maybe 0.55% and my mana regen by maybe 1.5%.

So NOW, I can play 1% WORSE because the numbers in my new gear IMPROVE me, or I can play EVEN BETTER so that I can feel like my improvement is MORE than that 1%.

Yeah? See?

Of course it all adds up.

This makes sense, as when I first dinged 80 my Spellpower was a measley 1100. And sometimes my HoTs can't keep up and they don't do all the work for me. It was probably at the 1500 mark where they started to take over and I would run around EVEN MORE, and now at the 2200+ mark as I said before, we have FOUR dps.

The special case with those bracers, was that EVERY stat was an increase so the decision was effortless: "Buy now"

But when we lose an important stat, we begin to change our playstyles, even if you don't realize it to accomodate for it. Think on that. Let's say you traded your Crit stat completely for a Haste stat because along with the item, SP or AP had increased..hmm?

ANYWAYS BAI!

Turny the Teddy Bear

I have decided.

Turny is going Bear, not Chicken.

I remember the good old days, tanking with only Maul. This was back in the level 20s.

Boy have things changed.

As I said before, I had purchased my feral skills absent mindedly while upgrading my resto skills, so when the time came to me needing to actually tank, I had no idea what each button did except for ...maul and....swipe and bash. The end.

Frenzied Regeneration? Whoa it heals you off of rage, that could be useful. Berserk, where was Berserk on my list now that I think of it, I think it makes Maul have no cooldown? Oops, didn't use it. Mangle? I thought only cats could Mangle, but Bears could mangle too, with a 4.5 second cooldown...odd. I like swipe!

Swipe, swipe, swipe. Maul is not "in use" click it, mangle off cooldown, use it.

Whoa slow down what's going on?

Oh right.

So yesterday I joined a group to run some BC Heroics, and had offered to HEAL my way to the achievements. As the part was formed, 4/5 of us were in either leather or cloth, and only one level 78 warrior who did not really have a tanking spec. But that's ok right?

No, they got squashed. Not as fast as the rest of us, but got squashed.

Dilemme, what do we need? Someone with a shield or a bear. *Looks at Turny*

I was in Feral Kitten Fight mode and ...really with a click of the mouse I could be a bear.

But...my HP is crap. My glyphs are....ok I have glyph of STARFIRE OK?? I don't really use Feral except for quests and it gets the job done, end of story.

Now I do have every single piece of leather for H ToC so technically my itemization is fine, save for some crappy trinkets and random blues from levelling, but my HP *with* the Priest buff was only 21k. Odd. My defense was only 400, and with my current armor, my mitigation was only at about 61% damage is mitigated....is that good or not? I don't know, never read up on tanking or know anything about it save for those few times back in noob-world.

ANYWAYS, I say "I don't think I can do this, but we could try".

Pull, pull. I was healable. Didn't really die. Didn't really know what my buttons did. It was *learn hell-a-fast time*.

So on the next few pulls I just spammed Swipe and went into my spellbook looking for things that looked useful and there I found Mangle, and Frenzied Regen, (I couldn't find Berserk, that completely passed my mind).

We did Heroic Blood Furnace, and Ramparts and it was OMGWTF?

Afterwards, I went back to Moonville and respecced for the tanking talents and now I shall be working on my gear-set.

It is time to practise. In ..normal UK! (Just to be safe)
