Major OxyContin case headlines December session

The justices will be back in the courtroom on Nov. 27. The seven cases scheduled for the December session include disputes over federal immigration law, taxation, and the power of administrative agencies. On Dec. 4, the justices will hear one of the highest-profile bankruptcy cases in recent memory, a case which stems from thousands of lawsuits against OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma.

Justices take up Native health care funding cases and a dispute over sentencing guide

 at 10:36 a.m.

In a list of orders on Monday the Supreme Court took up cases involving federal funding for the administrative costs of Native American tribes’ health care services and a dispute over sentencing under the Armed Career Criminal Act.

Justices schedule major cases on deference to federal agencies

 at 1:53 p.m.

The court on Friday released the calendar for its January session, with nine cases scheduled from Jan. 8 and Jan. 17. Headlining the session are two cases asking the justices to overrule a landmark decision on deference to federal administrative agencies.

Court refuses Florida’s request to reinstate anti-drag law

 at 5:26 p.m.

A divided court on Thursday denied Florida’s request to allow it to temporarily enforce a law that makes it a misdemeanor to allow children at drag shows. An Orlando restaurant chain says the law violates the First Amendment. Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Neil Gorsuch indicated that they would have granted the state’s request.
