If you’re interested in Nuzlockes, or just a fan of pokemon in general, I highly recommend checking out YouTuber ‘FlygonHG’, who does very well crafted ‘hardcore nuzlockes’ with additional restrictions, like ‘grass type only’. This guy is extremely knowledgeable about pokemon, and has a knack for storytelling and humor in his videos. If you watch him for awhile, you’ll start to recognize some of his signature video tropes, like his Taylor Swift references or his dedication to pronouncing pokemon names correctly. Today I’ve assembled a list of one FlygonHG Nuzlocke per region so you can dip your toes into his extensive filmography. I originally wanted to write this post for a ‘Pokemon Month’ on my blog, but that didn’t happen this year, however I hope to do another (perhaps themed) edition of this post in the future, hopefully for a Pokemon Month that actually comes to fruition.
Kanto – The One That Started it All
FlygonHG’s first video, a FireRed hardcore nuzlocke with no additional restrictions shows off his star power from the beginning. It’s a great intro to the hardcore nuzlocke if you aren’t familiar, and it sparked an interest in nuzlockes for me that I never had before.
Johto – Smeargle Only
Flygon has done a few nuzlockes where he restricts his team to just one pokemon, but in my opinion, this is the best. One thing nuzlockes do best is make you use, and maybe get pretty attached, to pokemon you otherwise never would have put on your team. Though smeargle has terrible stats, it knows the unique move ‘Sketch’, which allows it to permanently learn the last move its opponent used. Smeargle can learn almost every move, including some very powerful ones, which makes for an exciting and strategic nuzlocke.
Hoenn – A Classic
Monotype nuzlockes are FlygonHG’s signature videos. In this Pokemon Emerald nuzlocke, Flygon restricts himself to water types in a region know all too well for ‘too much water’. Playing a pokemon game casually usually requires little strategy other than knowing type match-ups (or just over-leveling). Monotype nuzlockes can make certain encounters very easy, and others almost impossible without some extreme strategizing, and it’s incredibly satisfying to watch Flygon successfully execute a well thought out game plan. Or to watch him miss a 95% accurate move and get knocked out by a critical hit.
Sinnoh
If you’ve played Pokemon Diamond, you know how rare fire types are in the game. Only chimchar and ponyta are available before the Elite Four, so this is a rather challenging monotype hardcore nuzlocke. This video takes the monotype nuzlocke to the extreme, and reminds us all that there’s more to a pokemon than its typing.
Unova – The Snaplocke
What if Thanos did his famous snap in the world of pokemon? Half the pokemon are eliminated and the Avengers have to battle their way through Unova. This is Flygon’s second snaplocke, but you’ll only have to watch a couple minutes into the video to figure out why I chose this one for my list. This might just be the best of the MCU.
Kalos
Flygon’s only fairy type monolocke, it’s great to see the gem 6 games get some appreciation. Despite it being one of the easier games in the series, it can still be challenging when you add in some restrictions. There’s a pretty epic flamethrower in this episode, so definitely watch the whole way through.
Alola – Valentine’s Day Special
Flygon sometimes does holiday-themed nuzlockes and this pink pokemon only nuzlocke was completed in time for Valentine’s Day. And with all the Barbiecore going on right now, I thought this was the perfect addition to this list. Pokemon Sun and Moon, and especially Ultra Sun and Moon, are definitely the most difficult of the modern pokemon games, so they always take some careful strategizing in a hardcore nuzlocke.
Galar – The Fundraiser
In this ‘Team Seas’ fundraiser hardcore nuzlocke, Flygon uses pokemon themed around cleaning up body’s of water. This mostly includes water types, but there are a few others, including a Galarian corsola. This is one of the most uniquely themed team restrictions, and it’s all for a great cause.
Paldea – Cats
In this Pokemon Violet hardcore nuzlocke, Flygon only uses ‘cat’ pokemon, who are all named after this patreon supporters’ cats. These cats are all featured in this video as well, so if you like watching cat videos and looking at cute cats pics, this is a great video for you. Flygon had viewers vote on whether each eeveelution was a cat or a dog prior to his puppylocke video, and determined that espeon, umbreon, leafeon, and vaporeon are cats, while the rest are dogs. As an open world pokemon game, you may be wondering how to do a nuzlocke and this video, along with any of Flygon’s other Scarlet/Violet videos make for a great guide.
Thanks for checking out today’s post! I hope you’ll find at least one FlygonHG video that you enjoy and maybe even check out some of his other videos.
