Otha Sollaala – An instant mood lifter of a song

So, as I think I’ve mentioned here before, my new place is in a thickly populated neighbourhood. Houses on all sides, every window looks out into another. Naturally, sounds leak from them all into mine. A few play loud music almost on a daily basis. I usually just drown them out by playing my own. But today, being a lazy Saturday, and me not having anything particular to do, I’ve been listening to the random mishmash of music that’s been seeping in — Hindi songs from one quarter, varieties of Tamil from others.

And one of them played one of my top happy songs of the last decade and a half: Otha Sollaala from Aadukalam (2011). Mood instantly lifted. Went from listlessness to grinning and dancing about in seconds. 😀

I still remember when I first heard this song. It was when I watched the movie in a theatre with friends. The song situation, Dhanush’s acting (he portrays that gay abandon so well), the tune, the voice, the music, everything so perfect. I was grinning so wide and still do each time I hear it.

Friends were later complaining about how the movie had no songs that were picturised well. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. For them, for a video to qualify as good, it had to be shot in exotic locations and feature pretty clothes and cool dance moves. Never went to a movie with those friends again.

Anyway, I danced around like Dhanush today even though I have nothing to really feel happy or dance about. It still made me happy for those few minutes. And sometimes that’s enough to keep going.

P.S.: Only just noticed that the other guy is played by Attakathi Dinesh! I didn’t know him at the time and missed this until now.
