the roaring nineties

BERJAYA what is it?
We all (hopefully) remember the nineties; it's the age in which many of us grew up. It's also the age that directly influenced (most of) us, whether we wanted it to or not. If you wanna get all philosophical, the collective was created by the aesthetic of this era; due to the greed and the excess of the decade we've subconsciously rebelled and appropriated our hippie forefathers DIY attitude. So, why not make a compilation as a tribute to those lovely years that made us who we are today? We think it's a grand idea (and maybe an ironic one?).

So, as a fundraiser event (because the family is poor, and we needs money to make us big and strong), several collective artists will be putting together a compilation of hits from the 90's!
There is no requirement to join, and everyone who sends in a track will be included. To find top songs from the 90's, check out the Billboard charts here!

for sale?
There will be only 100 handmade copies for sale; they'll be $10 a pop (twill be a guaranteed collective collectable!).
Once they're sold out, the album will be put up for free as an exclusive release (so don't fret if you absolutely must hear your favorite artist cover Tupac and you're absolutely broke).

what is it a fundraiser for?
This is what the money raised will go towards:
1. $100 will be used to buy another server so that we can double our bandwidth capacity (plus the site will run faster; this way we won't crash if we get super popular).
2. We can't stop here, this is bat country (a small portion will be given to the bat king as tribute)
3. The rest will go towards advertising for the Collective! We're thinking magazine; we'll have a poll once the time comes. In the family, democracy shall rule supreme.

how can i submit?
Submissions for the compilation are open until March 30th, so get to recording!
(yes, the recording date was pushed back a month and 1/2 so that I could get my shit together)

To quote Tinyfolk:

basically, the idea is to do something well-known and kinda dorky. if you have to look up if it was on the top 40 charts, then it probably isn't the kind of thing that would fit. if it's something you would have heard on radio stations (not college radio stations) in the 90s that would have been a "new release" at the time, then it will probably work.

To submit, email me at
001collective@gmail.com

Include your artist name, the name of the song you covered, who the original artist was, and how you'd like your name shown (capitalization preferences and whatnot). Oh, and don't forget the song (either attached or a link to download)!

If you sent in your cover and it's not up here, send me another email (my apologies). If I messed up your name or something, once again with the emailing (and once again with the apologies)! Something else? Email!

ok, cool.
If everything goes right, there will be enough room on the CD for everyone; I refuse to exclude anyone who wants to be a part of this. This page will morph to reflect the status of the comp; once it's for sale there'll be a link to buy it and pictures of the CD and all of it's DIY, hand-made art glory (or horror). Once all the copies are sold, it will again evolve! There will be polls and whatnot so that everyone can decide every aspect of what the money will go towards. Long live the collective! Long live the family!

(oh, and leave a comment below to let us know anything or everything at all, or if you have any questions about stuff)

I sort of lost track of the 90's I was doing music in the cold west in the late 80's when Nirvana broke it sort of killed the alternative radio format. a lot of us thought that other grunge bands would brake as well. instead of Born Against we got metal bands with dropped "d" tunning I stopped listening to the radio. My housing situation was a bit uncertain too.

I think I'm the only one

I think I'm the only one that's heard all the songs; but I can say with pride that they're goddamn awesome. A lot of these songs I used to listen to every day on the radio when I was a kid, but I didn't know any of the names, haha.

I'm going to do a rap song or a country song because we don't have any of those yet, but I haven't looked too in-depth yet. I want it to be a song that'll make people go 'HOLY SHIT I REMEMBER THIS'.
