Water Main Break in Carrollton, Boil Water Alert Issued (PHOTOS)Updated 11:50 a.m. A water main break in the Carrollton area is causing street flooding, and low water pressure in the Uptown area. The break was reportedly in the area of Spruce and Burdette Sts. The Sewerage and Water Board called the incident a large break, and did not immediately release a timetable for cleanup.
The water main ruptured in the 7800 block of Cohn St., according to the Sewerage and Water Board. Millions of gallons of water were lost from the system during the break.
Before repair work can begin, workers must turn off a series of valves. When the valves are shut off, water from the flooding should begin to recede, the Board said.
The Sewerage and Water Board had no timetable for repairs.
In other recent incidents, low water pressure has been the prelude to a boil water alert. As of 11 a.m. Tuesday, no boil advisory had been issued.
The city is asking drivers to avoid the intersection of Carrollton & Claiborne Ave., Carrollton Ave. from Green St. to Claiborne Ave. and Claiborne Ave. from Pine St. Carollton Ave.
UPDATE (11:50 a.m.) BOIL WATER ALERT ISSUED The City issued a boil water advisory for much of the Uptown area. The area affected by the boil water advisory is bounded by S. Carrollton Ave., Maple Street, Loyola St. Jackson Ave. and the Mississppi River.
Homes and businesses that are not in the area do not need to boil, according to the City.
All water used for drinking, preparing food or brushing teeth should be brought to a rolling boil before consuming, the City said. Bathing is also not advised.
