Pittsburgh Magazine Reader's Poll!

Did you know that there's a reader's poll being taken RIGHT NOW over at Pittsburgh Magazine?

Yeppers! Here's the link.

Did you know that there's a category for favorite "Local Blogger"?

Yeppers, there is!

Um...you do know what I am asking you to do, right?

GO VOTE!

For THIS blog!

And if you should happen to pass your eyes over the "Local Comedian" box and wonder whose name you should type in, try "Gab Bonesso". She's way cool, she's way funny, she wears kickass men's neckties as belts, AY-und she plays the trumpet (but only sometimes, and you have to ask her nicely.)

The Gab Show

The lovely wife and I caught The Gab show last night dahn-tahn.

Good show. Here's how the P-G previewed it:
Another post-Gallery Crawl event Friday is the launch of comedian Gab Bonesso's new project with theater/performance company Bricolage. "Gab Bonesso's Comedy Party" showcases comedy, but in a context closer to theater and performance art than to comedy clubs and stand-up venues.

Bonesso said the concept is influenced by Andy Warhol's famous parties at The Factory during the '60s. "He had this ability to bring artists from all different genres together." Similarly, she says, "Comedy Party" will feature "the edgiest and hardest-working Pittsburgh artists," along with the occasional stand-up comedians from across the country.

Pop band Meeting of Important People will start the evening off at 9 p.m. The lineup also includes a video by Neal Rosenblat, political comedy from John McIntire, a Cat Power cover band and an hour-long comedy set from Bonesso.
Something you need to know if you've never seen The Gabster make the comedy: There's a vast difference between her off and on stage personas. She outright explodes on stage in zesty manic energy, bouncing left and right while swearing like a sailor with Tourette's. This surprised me a little the first time I saw her perform because I usually found her to be painfully shy at our Bible study group.

And here's something else few people know about The Gab: She's volunteered at the American Family Association's phone crisis line ever since she made her abstinence pledge right after graduating college.

This, too, was a surprise to me, considering all the vagina and abortion jokes she makes on the stage.

Next time she does the show, go see her. You won't be disappointed.

The Pundit Show

So far Sue's the only one who's commented on this past weekend's "Pittsburgh Pundits" show. She wrote:
Actually, the conversation was thoughtful and the lone Republican was a very good sport (and very, very smart). I could listen to Chris Potter and Tony Norman agree with each other all evening. It would be great if they added a woman for the November performance. I nominate Maria from 2 PJs.
Me, too.

Sue saves her best for the Gab-ster:
The most magnificent moment from the entire evening was Gab Bonesso's performance. I love her to pieces and think she's hysterical and edgy and brilliant.
This is Gab.
BERJAYA

In this picture she was glaring at something Tony Norman (described by John Brabender as a "militant" African-American during the show) said. This is Tony:

BERJAYA"Militant" is not the word I'd use to describe my friend Tony. African-American, certainly. Militant? Not so much.

John McIntire hosted Tony and the above mentioned John Brabender. Alt-media wonk Chris Potter of the City Paper rounded out the panel. The comedy before the discussion was good (Sorry Gab, the set went better than you think it did) and the discussion itself was freewheeling.

Let's hope there's another one soon.

For the record Maria did NOT call me an Oaf.

That would be John McIntire.

Uh, wait. I mean that it was John McIntire who called me an oaf.

Oh and Jon my name's spelled DeAngelo NOT Deangelo. I hope we can get it right next time.

Tomorrow Night

In the book of Malachi, there is a prophecy about a forerunner who would prepare the way for the Gab:
"See, I will send my messenger, St. John the Macyapper, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the one you are seeking will come to this Comedy Club; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come," says the GAB Almighty. - McIntire 3:1 (DMD translation).
This prophecy, my friends, will be fulfilled tomorrow night at the Improv:
And there were in the same country bloggers abiding in the fields, keeping watch over their blogs by night. And lo, the angel of the GAB came upon them, and the glory of the GAB shone round about them, and they were so afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not, for behold, I bring unto you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you this day is brought in the City of Rooney, a Savior ette, which is GAB. And this shall be a sign unto you; you shall find the babe wrapped in wrinkled clothes with a gentleman's tie for a belt and speaking into a microphone in a comedy club at the Waterfront. And suddenly there was with the angel, a multitude of the heavenly host, praising GAB, and saying, ‘Glory to GAB in the highest, and on Earth peace, good will toward men (wymyn, too)'”. Ravenstahl 2:8 (DMD translation)
That’s what Comedy is all about, Charlie brown.

Can I get an amen!

Hallelujah!

PS The Roches will NOT be performing tomorrow - but I am sure they're just as enthused about John and Gab's gig.

One Political Junkie on the Air Today!

I'll be on 93.7FM The Zone radio today with John McIntire and Gab Bonesso around 1:30 PM discussing -- what else -- Mayor Luke Ravenstahl's man crush and groupie-like behavior regarding Tiger Woods.

Just kidding about the essense of the topic. The real discussion will be Lil Lukey's modus operandi:
Lil Luke does something wrong/stupid. Then he lies about it/tries to cover it up. Then he blames the media, or the blogs or calls it "political" when he's caught.
You can call into the show at 412.333.9370!

May 4, 2007

Coincidence? I think not.

Adrian McCoy (who walks the radio beat at the P-G) reports:

KDKA-AM (1020) is adding a new talk host to its lineup. Kevin Miller, an Ohio native who filled in for KDKA afternoon host Fred Honsberger recently, will host a weekday talk show from 12:15 to 3 p.m. starting May 14.

Miller comes from talk station WWTN-FM in Nashville, Tenn., where he was morning show host. He has also worked at stations in Raleigh, N.C.; Birmingham, Ala.; and Nashua, N.H.

Honsberger will move to 3 to 6 p.m., with the last hour of that shift devoted to an increased role in the station's "5 O'Clock Total News Hour."

Take a look at that last paragraph. Fred's show is now on 1 to 5 in the afternoon. I don't have any evidence about anything here, but I have to wonder why they're shifting the Honzman a few hours into the late afternoon.

Could it be that another radio show's been threatening the Honz? I mean, has there been a recent addition to the local radio market in the early afternoon slot that might possibly be nibbling away at the Honzman's ratings?

Yes - John McIntire.

It's been only a month, but is it any coincidence that Johnny Mac's scorching radio show overlaps Fred from 1 to 4 daily? Could that be the reason they're moving Fred out of Johnny Mac's way?

I don't know. I'm just asking.

The logical fallacy here, of course, is post hoc ergo propter hoc. But since I don't think either Fred or John actually speak Latin, I'll just ignore it and go for the cheap laughs.

Let's compare the two. McIntire's funnier than Honsberger. He does better impressions of Fred Rogers and Dick Cheney. He's hipper. He's in greater need of therapy. Fred, on the other hand, is a much better dresser.

And then there's Gab. Even if Fred and John matched up evenly (and we know they don't - see the previous paragraph), the scales would be tilted inexorably, unflinchingly in John's direction because of Gab Bonesso. Gab Bonesso, the spikey-haired, with tie for a belt, Timberlake-stalking, once and future trumpeter, frequently braless dynamo who answers the phone and says to Johnny Mac at least 15 times a day, "I hate you - whatev." That Gab Bonesso.

If you've never heard the Kinkersons, you're missing something truly disturbing.

But I don't mean that in a bad way.

Another Pelosi Myth

Recently, I caught a few minutes of Fox "News" watcher Mike Pintek guest-hosting on John McIntire's old show over at PCNC.

For what it's worth McIntire's back on the radio these days at 93.7, The Zone. He and Wolverine-fan Gab Bonesso can be heard daily doing bits like "Johnny Mac, Lesbo-flipper" and "Gab Bonesso, bad phone sex operator." Give it a listen if you like. Some are appalled, some are entertained. Some are at work and can't listen to it anyway.

Anyway back to the political bloggery.

If there's any more evidence that Pintek's been drinking the conservative cool-aid, this is it. He's been parroting the RNC talking point that Speaker Pelosi blundered on that recent trip to the Middle East. If you look closely, you can actually see the panic-based spittle when Pintek's forced to pinch out those two words: "Speaker Pelosi."

The "blunder" was something about her claiming to be bringing a message from Israel, and the Israeli Prime Minister claiming otherwise.

Josh Marshall has the story. Unlike the political construction the wingnuts inhabit, reality is far far more complicated. Marshall's piece is based in part on this article from Haaretz.com. In it, you'll find these two paragraphs:

Following his visit to the forces in the field, a decision was made to publicly address the concerns of a possible deterioration with the Syrians, and to send a message that Israel has no intention of attacking Syria, nor is there any coordinated plan with the U.S. for a joint attack against Iran.

The speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, is scheduled to meet with Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus today, and will deliver a message of calm from Israel.

So much for Pintek's RNC talking points.

As I wrote, the real story is a lot more complicated than Pintek or the Washington Post editorial thinks.
